Maine has three educational institutions that offer programs with a holistic approach to nutrition. Available programs lead to the award of a certificate, bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree; a minor in holistic and integrative health is also available. Concentrations are offered by some schools, allowing students to more personally tailor their education.
The following list gives a brief outline of each program. The schools, actual programs offered and tuition information are presented in the comparison table.
Saint Joseph's College of Maine
Located in Standish, Saint Joseph's College of Maine offers a Bachelor of Science in Health and Wellness Promotion degree program. This program teaches students to study the health of the community. Students then learn how to create and implement a plan that targets wellness and health issues within the community. The curriculum of study is holistic, focusing on spiritual, emotional, mental and physical elements of a person's health. Courses include personal health, community health, sport and fitness training, community nutrition and stress management.
University of Maine
The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Maine in Orono offers a Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Human Nutrition degree program. This program is offered with three concentrations - human nutrition and dietetics, food science and food management. The degree program has the approval of the Institute of Food Technologists, which offers scholarships to food science majors. The dietetic option may be of interest to students who want to become registered dietitians. Other programs available include a graduate certificate in foods and nutrition, a Master of Science in Food Science and Human Nutrition and a Ph.D. in Food and Nutrition Sciences. Professors in the department have associations with area communities, health care facilities and food industries within the state of Maine. Research by faculty may involve areas that can be considered holistic, such as obesity prevention and behavioral intervention. The department has new laboratories that are used for research. There is a Food Science Club that may help students to network professionally.
University of Southern Maine
The University of Southern Maine is located in Portland. The university's School of Nursing offers a Certificate in Foundations of Holistic Health for students interested in complementary healing. A holistic health course covers therapies and techniques related to nutrition and other areas. A second holistic health course covers nutrition and other areas related to healing. The school also offers a minor in holistic and integrative health. This program provides students enrolled in any field with a broad survey of topics in holistic health, including nutrition. Although a student taking this minor can pursue any major, the school recommends the program for students enrolled in a human services program, such as psychology.
