Monmouth County Vocational School District is located in Neptune and offers a cosmetology program that's open to students who have completed high school. This program takes 10 months to complete and prepares students for state licensure. Cosmetology students can complete the program on a part-time basis, choosing between day or twilight (2 p.m. to 7 p.m.) attendance hours.

Morris County Vocational School District

Located in Denville, Morris County Vocational School District offers a board-approved cosmetology program that blends traditional lectures with demonstrations and student practice. This program provides enrolled students with a license preparation online exam and a kit containing beauty and hair tools. Students cover topics of study like hair cutting, color application and skin care techniques.

Ocean County Vocational Technical School

This school's cosmetology program is offered through the Toms River and Brick campus locations. This school's board-approved cosmetology program has a flexible format, and students have the option of completing the program in 10 or 20 months by attending during twilight hours (2 p.m. to 7 p.m.) on weekdays or evening hours for 2-3 days per week. Program topics include barbering, nail services, hair styling and business management. A written exam prior to program admission is also required.

Union County Vocational Technical School

The board-approved cosmetology program at this school in Scotch Plains accepts students 4 times a year. This 1-year program requires full-time attendance during the hours of 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Cosmetology students receive traditional classroom and hands-on instruction in the program. Students learn a variety of hair styling, cutting and treatment techniques, along with facial makeup and nail care skills.

Career Requirements

The New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling mandates licensure for all cosmetologists offering beauty services, such as makeup artistry. In order to apply for licensure, applicants need to be high school graduates who are 17 years of age or older and have completed 1,200 hours of training in a board-approved cosmetology program. Applicants must then successfully pass the state licensing exam in order to earn licensure.
