Essential Information

Nevada-based students interested in earning graduate degree in marriage and family therapy may choose to earn a master's degree in the field; a minor in family studies is also available. Master's programs are open only to students who hold a bachelor's degree. Programs can take two and a half years to complete. In addition to classroom instruction, students must complete practicum requirements, internships, a capstone course, and a thesis, in some cases; one of the programs also requires the successful passage of a comprehensive exam.

University of Nevada Las Vegas

Located in Las Vegas, this university offers a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy program that includes 60 semester credits of study. This program takes approximately two-and-a-half years to complete and requires students to complete a thesis, capstone course, internship and practicum in addition to coursework. Coursework covers topics like substance abuse in marriage and family therapy, counseling across the lifespan, family systems theory and couples therapy.

The university also offers a minor in family studies that prepares students for graduate-level studies in marriage and family therapy. Earning this minor requires the completion of six courses, such as successful couple and marital relationships, human sexuality and personal growth.

University of Nevada Reno

The University of Nevada Reno is located in Reno and offers a Master of Arts in Counseling and Educational Psychology with a concentration in marital, couple and family counseling that requires 67 credit hours of study. Courses in this program cover topics like career and lifespan development, group counseling and couples counseling. Students are required to complete two internships totaling 600 hours in order to graduate. The program also features two portions of a comprehensive examination; the first part requires the submission of a video tape and the second part is a written test. Graduate students also have the opportunity to work in the Downing Counseling Clinic, which is located at the school.

Career Requirements

Nevada requires marriage and family therapists to be licensed prior to practicing in the state. The Board of Examiners for Marriage and Family Therapists and Clinical Professional Counselors is responsible for overseeing the licensure process in Nevada. To become licensed, an individual must complete at least 45 semester hours of graduate coursework from an accredited institution and pass an exam. Upon passing the exam, an individual must also complete 3,000 hours in an internship before becoming eligible for licensure. Students should be aware that there is no specific accrediting agency that must approve the graduate level-program.

There are two four-year, public schools in Nevada that offer marriage and family therapy programs. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) has approved the master's degree program offered by the University of Nevada Reno. Although no longer accredited by CACREP, the University of Nevada Las Vegas offers also offers a master's degree program in marriage and family therapy.
