Essential Information

In Maryland, contract law courses are offered through a variety of legal-related programs, including associate's and bachelor's degree programs in paralegal studies and professional Juris Doctor (J.D.) programs. There are also paralegal certificate programs that offer these classes. Only two schools in the state offer contract law courses as part of J.D. programs, the University of Baltimore and the University of Maryland - Baltimore. Both of those law schools are approved by the American Bar Association, as are a few of the paralegal studies programs. An overview of the largest eight schools in Maryland with programs that offer contract law courses is listed below.


Anne Arundel Community College

Arnold's Anne Arundel Community College offers students the opportunity to study contract law through introductory courses in paralegal studies. The courses are part of the curriculum in the American Bar Association-approved Paralegal Studies Degree and Paralegal Studies Certificate programs, the Continuing Legal Education seminars, and the transfer program in law and jurisprudence. These programs cover a range of legal areas in addition to contracts, such as constitutional law, the court system, criminal law, torts and procedural law.

Frederick Community College

Located in Frederick, this institution offers a contract course as part of their associate of applied science in paralegal studies degree and paralegal certificate programs. Among the areas of contract law that this course covers are third party rights, contract breaches and contract formation. These programs also offer courses in torts, legal research, family law, legal documents and estates. Graduates from this program should be able to execute a variety of professional functions, such as prepping witnesses, evaluating legal facts and abiding by ethical obligations.

Hagerstown Community College

At Hagerstown Community College, located in Hagerstown, students can take a contract law course through paralegal studies associate's degree and certificate programs. In addition to learning about contract law, students study legal research, real estate law, domestic relations and litigation principles. The paralegal studies certificate program is open both to students who already have experience in paralegal professions and to those new to the field. The associate of arts in paralegal studies program is designed for students who seek to continue their paralegal studies at the bachelor's degree level.

Harford Community College

Bel Air's Harford Community College offers a course in contract law through its American Bar Association-approved associate of applied science in paralegal studies degree program. The contract law course, which students take in their third semester, covers topics such as the Uniform Commercial Code, fraud statutes and remedies. The program emphasizes ethical and professional development. A paralegal studies certificate can be earned through a certificate program that includes the same paralegal courses as the degree program.

Montgomery College

The paralegal associate's degree and certificate programs offered at Rockville's Montgomery College offer legal courses that cover topics specific to Maryland statutes, such as wills and probate estates. The contract course also requires students to understand contract procedure specific to the Uniform Commercial Code. Students learn how to create sales agreements and contracts that meet state law requirements. Students can earn an associate of applied science in paralegal studies degree and the paralegal studies certificate.

Prince George's Community College

Largo's Prince George's Community College offers a contract course through its paralegal/legal assistant associate's degree program. Students in this program may earn credits that transfer to nearby 4-year colleges, such as Excelsior College and the University of Maryland - University College. In addition to contracts, this program also cover topics in criminal law, legal writing, torts, civil litigation and insurance law.

Stevenson University

Stevenson University, located in Stevenson, offers a contract course through an ABA-approved bachelor's degree program in paralegal studies, the only 4-year paralegal program in the state. In this course, students learn about bargaining methods, drafting contracts and enforcing contracts. To supplement their conventional classroom-based instruction, students may take advantage of an internship program that offers practical training in prosecutor's offices, insurance companies or private law firms.

University of Baltimore

This institution, located in Baltimore, offers two contract law courses within its Juris Doctor program, which is administered by the law school. The first course provides introductory knowledge on topics such as mutual assent, promissory estoppel and fraud statutes. The second course covers topics such as contract interpretation techniques, misrepresentation and restitution.

University of Maryland - Baltimore

The University of Maryland in Baltimore, also offers a series of courses in contract law through its Juris Doctor program. An introductory course in contracts is the first course in a 2-semester program on contract formation and enforcement. These contract law courses cover areas such as contract freedom, remedies and defenses and form the basis of further legal study in areas such as criminal law, corporate finance, consumer protection and legal analysis.
