There are several schools in Maryland that provide drafting programs. Because computer-aided drafting is commonly used in design and manufacturing, schools generally provide computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) training rather than manual drafting. The ten largest programs listed below offer training in industry standard CADD software, and many schools have state-of-the-art computer labs for students in this field.
Certificate programs offer industry-specific training for CADD students who can focus in CADD for landscape, architectural or mechanical design. Associate's degree programs are also available for students seeking a more comprehensive program that includes general education courses as well.
Anne Arundel Community College
Located in Arnold, Anne Arundel Community College provides a 28-credit certificate program in architecture CAD. The school's CAD/drafting labs provide the latest hardware and CAD software, as well as a machine lab with a computer numerical controlled (CNC) milling machine, lathe and three-dimensional printer. Courses examine CAD software and technology, and students are introduced to drafting principles in mechanical, civil, architectural, industrial and electronics engineering.
Baltimore City Community College

The 15-credit certificate program in basic computer-aided drafting includes more advanced drafting procedures, drawing and modeling skills. Elective courses cover graphic design, leadership and emerging technologies, and a cooperative education experience is available.
Frederick Community College
Frederick Community College in Frederick offers three computer-aided design programs that prepare graduates for entry-level positions in drafting. The three programs focus on architectural drafting and design, drafting procedures and drafting technology. The school offers an associate's degree program, a 30-credit certificate program and a 26-credit computer-aided design operator certificate program. Within the programs, students may have the opportunity to complete an internship.
Hagerstown Community College
Located in Hagerstown, this community college offers a letter of recognition program, a certificate program and an associate's degree program covering computer-aided design technology through the engineering department. The letter of recognition program is nine credits covering beginning courses in CAD and computer graphics. The certificate program and the associate's degree program cover the same technical CAD coursework, with training in technology and software, mechanics and mechanical design, materials, CNC programming and programmable logic controllers (PLC). The associate's degree program adds general education coursework.
Harford Community College
Harford Community College's campus is located in Bel Air, where the school offers an associate's degree program and a nine-credit certificate program in computer-aided design and drafting. These programs delve into the general technology and software used for computer-aided design and drafting, such as AutoCAD and Solidworks. The associate's degree program includes general education courses and additional topics, like engineering materials. There are a variety of CAD electives offered, including the opportunity for on-the-job training through a cooperative experience.
Howard Community College
The Howard County planned community of Columbia along the Baltimore-Washington corridor is where Howard Community College is situated. The school offers an associate's degree program in computer-aided design and a certificate program in computer-aided design technology. The 21-credit certificate program introduces students to the principles of drafting, microcomputer systems and beginning-to-advanced CAD technology. The associate's degree program provides comprehensive training in CAD systems, computer systems and drafting principles, as well as general education courses.
Rockville forms part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan area and is the home of Montgomery College. The college provides a CAD certificate for the building professional as part of the architectural and construction technology program. The certificate program provides courses in CAD technology and software; three-dimensional design and modeling; and architectural design principles. The credits earned in this program can be applied to the architectural engineering associate's degree program at Montgomery College.
The Community College of Baltimore County
The School of Applied and Information Technology at The Community College of Baltimore County, situated in Baltimore, provides an associate's degree program and several 15-credit certificate programs in computer-aided design. One certificate program prepares students to become AutoCAD operators, focusing on drawing, three-dimensional drawing, modeling and technical animation. The CAD architecture certificate program covers CAD engineering drawing, building information modeling, technical animation and blueprint reading. The CAD management certificate program explores the customization and management of CAD.
The associate's degree program examines architectural and engineering drafting principles, CAD software and technology, along with general education courses. Credits from the certificate programs can be applied to the associate's degree program. Within the program, students have access to a state-of-the-art printer.
Wor-Wic Community College
Salisbury is the location of Wor-Wic Community College, which offers two certificate programs in architectural computer-aided drafting and manufacturing computer-aided drafting.
