There are two universities in Maryland that offer Juris Doctor (J.D.) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) degrees. At the master's degree level, students might be able to specialize in taxation, business law, health law, international law or environmental law. In addition, one community college offers a pre-law associate degree program for students planning to attend law school. Law courses cover legal research and writing, legal ethics, criminal law, torts, contracts and civil procedures. Students may be able to take part in college-sponsored legal clinics, professional seminars or supervised experiences.
Anne Arundel Community College
Anne Arundel Community College, a public college located in Arnold, has an enrollment of almost 18,000. Students who are interested in entering the legal field can begin their studies at Anne Arundel. The community college offers an Associate of Arts in Law and Jurisprudence program, designed for students who plan to transfer to a four year college to complete their studies. Graduates of the Associate of Arts program will be prepared to move on to earning their bachelor's degree and taking the LSAT's before entering law school. Required courses for the students in the law and jurisprudence program include legal research and writing, constitutional law, and legal ethics.
University of Baltimore
Baltimore's University of Baltimore is a public college that serves more than 6,000 students a year. At the University of Baltimore's School of Law, students can earn the Juris Doctor or the Master of Laws. The school offers several clinics for law students, including the Innocence Project Clinic, which was introduced in 2008. It allows students to work on post-conviction issues, such as scientific advances in evidence collection, forensics and legal research. UB's Juris Doctorate degree requires students to complete 87 credit hours. Required foundation courses cover topic such as civil procedure, torts, and criminal law. The university also offers two Master of Law programs. The Master of Laws in Taxation covers a wide variety of internal revenue topics, such as federal income taxation, corporations, partnerships, tax policy and the practice of tax law. This LLM can be earned alongside the JD through a combined degree program. The school also offers a Master of Laws in the Law of the United States degree designed to introduce foreign students who have law degrees to American jurisprudence.
University of Maryland, Baltimore
The University of Maryland in Baltimore serves more than 6,000 students per year. The university's Francis King Carey School of Law offers Juris Doctor and Master of Laws programs. The Juris Doctor curriculum provides basic instruction in criminal law, torts, civil procedure and contracts. Legal research and writing instruction begins at a basic level, and students are expected to write an academic treatment of a legal issue before graduation. All study is reinforced by supervised practice, seminars and specialized coursework in a student's area of interest. The university also offers the Master of Laws degree in a number of different areas. The school lists LL.M. specializations in business law, clinical law, constitutional law, crisis management, cyber security, environmental law, health law, intellectual property law and international and comparative law.
Students in Maryland who wish to practice law will be required to take and pass the state bar exam before they can legally practice law. Future lawyers should enroll in a Juris Doctor degree program, which will qualify them to sit for the state bar exam.
