Students who want to make a career out of working with food may be interested in earning a culinary degree or certificate. Students in Massachusetts have a number of options for schools that provide training in the culinary arts, including programs resulting in a certificate, associate's, bachelor's or master's degree. Majors could feature training in baking and pastry arts, gastronomy, culinary arts or professional cooking. Profiled below are eight public and private non-profit Massachusetts schools that offer degree and certificate programs for culinary students.

Berkshire Community College

Berkshire Community College is a two-year public college in Pittsfield that has a student population of more than 2,500. The school offers a one-year Certificate in Culinary Arts program that requires 28 credits of coursework. Students will take classes in food preparation, baking, kitchen management and wine appreciation.

Boston University

Boston University, a private university located in the city of Boston, enrolls over 32,000 students a year. The school's Master of Liberal Arts (MLA) in Gastronomy program covers numerous culinary topics, including the role of food from contemporary and historical perspectives. The program offers four different culinary concentrations, including history and culture, business and entrepreneurship, food policy and communication. All of the concentrations emphasize experiential learning, with a variety of hands-on cooking labs introduced to drive home culinary concepts. Undergraduate students may enroll in the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Hospitality/MLA in Gastronomy 4+1 program. This program allows B.S. graduates with a 3.0 GPA or better a spot in the MLA program under the umbrella of Boston University Metropolitan College.

Bristol Community College

Fall River's Bristol Community College enrolls approximately 9,000 students. Bristol students who are interested in the culinary arts can choose from two programs offered by the school: the Associate in Applied Science in Culinary Arts and the Associate in Applied Science in Culinary Arts with a concentration in baking and pastry. Students in the culinary arts program will take courses in basic and advanced culinary arts, mixology and bar management, sanitation, nutrition and advanced table services. Students specializing in baking and pastry will take courses in art skills for bakers, essentials of baking and advanced pastry arts. Both programs are designed to be completed in four semesters.

Bunker Hill Community College

More than 12,000 students attend Bunker Hill Community College in Boston. The school offers a two-semester Culinary Arts Certificate program with a curriculum that's designed to prepare students for entry-level food service industry positions through courses that cover menu design and purchasing, basic and advanced culinary and baking skills. This 29-credit Pastry Arts Certificate program imparts the necessary skills and experience for graduates to enter the baking and pastry field. This program shares many of its courses with the culinary arts program, including food service skills and an introduction to culinary arts. It also offers courses in topics like the principles of baking and cafe and bistro cuisine. Bunker Hill also offers an associate's degree program in culinary arts with concentrations in baking and pastry arts and culinary arts.

Holyoke Community College

Students attending Holyoke Community College - based in Holyoke - can enroll in the school's 31-credit Certificate of Culinary Arts program. Students will take courses in baking theory and practice, culinary math, banquet and a la carte cooking, nutrition and sanitation. Students will also need to complete the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) ServSafe exam.

Massasoit Community College

Massasoit Community College in Brockton is a public two-year college. The school offers an associate's degree program in culinary arts. Students in this program will take courses in table service, storeroom and inventory procedures, and menu design. They will also study international cuisine and various American regional cuisines, as well as complete more than 200 hours of work in food service. Students can also earn a pastry certificate.

Newbury College - Brookline

Approximately 1,000 students attend Newbury College in Brookline. Culinary arts students at Newbury can enroll in the Associate in Applied Science in Culinary Arts or the Associate in Applied Science in Baking and Pastry Arts program. Both options require students to complete 65 credit hours of course work and can be completed in two years. Culinary arts students will learn about world flavors, classical cuisine and dining room service. Baking and pastry students will study breads and rolls, cake artistry and baking operations. Students in both programs are required to complete internships. Two 18-credit certificate programs are also available in pastry arts and professional cooking.

North Shore Community College

North Shore Community College in Danvers offers a certificate and an associate's degree program in culinary arts. Students enrolled in the Culinary Arts and Food Service Certificate program will need to complete 12 courses. The program of study includes courses like food safety and sanitation, basic culinary techniques and introductory garde manger. The Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts and Food Service program includes many of the same courses as the certificate program. In addition, the associate's program includes course topics like American regional cuisine, wine in the food industry and classical baking.
