Master's degree programs that focus on international public health discuss health topics that impact global environments and international relationships. Explore the program, common courses and job opportunities.

Essential Information

Students pursuing a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with an emphasis on international public health may gain an understanding of public health needs in other industrialized countries or underdeveloped countries. MPH programs tend to combine a social and life sciences curriculum with medical and biological sciences courses. Students in MPH programs need to be able to understand the communities and populations involved in public health crises, as well as the scientific principles behind public health crises such as vectors and sanitation issues.

Applicants to these programs need a bachelor's or master's degree in an area of life or biological sciences. Depending on the program, applicants may also need two years of work experience in a health-related position.

Continuing Education Information

Students with a master's degree in public health can continue their education to earn a doctoral degree in public health, during which they might continue their study of international public health. Graduates of a public health Ph.D. program typically focus more on research and teaching rather than working in the field helping to coordinate care or aid; however, these programs do also allow students to attain senior level positions in public health organizations.

The United States requires certification or licensure for public health practitioners, but graduates of Ph.D. in Public Health programs who choose to work outside the U.S. will need to follow that country's guidelines for certifications or licensure.

Master's programs in international public health prepare students to work with healthcare issues on a global scale as health managers, directors and specialists. Graduates can pursue a Ph.D. in the field and will need to obtain the proper certification or licensure to practice.
