Some of these degree programs are offered in conjunction with teaching licensure coursework, which prepares individuals to earn teaching credentials through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. California State University - Fullerton

Based in Fullerton, the university offers multiple traditional on-campus master's degree programs, as well as various online-only master's degree programs in education. Areas of focus offered solely online include educational technology and educational administration. Additionally, these content areas are offered in a traditional classroom setting and hybrid format. Learning areas of focus only offered in a traditional classroom setting include elementary education, bilingual education, elementary education curriculum and instruction, secondary education, reading education, and instructional design and technology and special education. The university had the 24th best online graduate education program in 2013, as reported by 'U.S. News and World Report.'

California State University - Long Beach

Long Beach's California State University - Long Beach offers master's degree programs in multiple areas of focus including early childhood education, elementary and secondary education, mathematics, educational administration, student development in higher education, and special education. Additionally, students may obtain a master's degree in dual-language development, which examines native and bilingual English speakers in K-12 and adult education. The university also offers an educational psychology master's degree program, and the social and cultural analysis of education degree program examines social dynamics within education. Individuals specializing in language arts education may earn a master's degree in elementary or secondary education and pursue a reading certification, as well as a language arts specialist certificate, within three years.

California State University - Northridge

Located in Northridge, the university is part of the expansive California State University system. Secondary education master's degree courses meet one evening a week during the semester, and specializations include curriculum and instruction, science, mathematics, English, computers and educational technology and multicultural/multilingual education. Furthermore, the Master of Arts (M.A.) in Elementary Education has concentrations in curriculum and instruction, language and literacy, and multilingual/multicultural education. Students may also elect to obtain a master's degree in special education with specialization in deaf and hard of hearing, early childhood special education, educational therapy, mild-moderate disabilities or moderate-severe disabilities.

San Diego State University

The university, located in San Diego, offers multiple master's degree programs through eight departments in the College of Education. Students are required to hold a valid teaching credential or complete at least 12 credits in education before applying to one of the six master's degree programs administered by the School of Teacher Education. Online master's degree programs are offered in educational leadership and teaching: elementary education or secondary education. In addition, the online master's degree program in PreK-12 educational leadership includes a preliminary administrative services credential. The Department of Special Education offers a master's degree program in special education, which consists of several concentration areas. The university is home to the National Center on Urban School Transformation (NCUST) and the Center for Research on Math and Science Education (CRMSE).

San Francisco State University

San Francisco-based San Francisco State University provides master's degree programs in early childhood education, elementary education, secondary education, special education, and leadership studies. Areas of concentration in leadership studies include educational administration, adult education, instructional technologies, and special interest. The concentration in equity and social justice focuses upon culture, language, and gender and ethnic diversity in education. In addition to a Master of Arts in Special Education degree program, the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology degree program allows students to pursue licensure in speech pathology. Many of the master's degree programs require students to possess a teaching credential or complete equivalent concentration area coursework before applying.

San Jose State University

Located near Silicon Valley, the San Jose State University College of Education consists of seven academic departments. Also, the university is home to the Armstead Center for Communication Disorders, which provides clinical practicum opportunities to students. San Jose State University offers master's degree programs in counselor education, elementary education, educational administration and supervision, secondary education, speech pathology, and special education. Furthermore, students may receive career information from the Center for Careers in Education, located on-campus. The university offers a master's degree program in counselor education.

University of California - Berkeley

The University of California - Berkeley was ranked as having the 12th best education school in the nation by the 2013 edition of U.S. News and World Report. Founded in 1913, the School of Education offers 13 master's degree programs in education. In 2011, the university began the student teaching intensive developmental teacher education master's degree program. The full-time 15-month program is student teaching intensive and leads to a master's degree and a specialization credential in various subjects. The Education Psychology Library, located on-campus, holds more than 175,000 titles and more than 900 journals. The university opened a charter school, California Prep Academy, in 2004.

University of California - Davis

Located in Davis, the university offers a master's degree program in education with varying specialization options, which may include psychological studies, socio-cultural studies, educational assessment and measurement, and instructional studies. The master's degree program is offered in conjunction with a teaching credential, and students obtain the teaching credential after the first year of the master's degree program. After obtaining the teaching credential, students complete the master's degree program part-time over the course of two academic quarters. Furthermore, students may complete a general education curriculum and earn a master's degree in education without earning a teaching credential. The university also offers curricula for practicing teachers.

University of California - Los Angeles

Based in Los Angeles, the university was ranked as having the 8th best education school in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in 2013. The university offers various education master's degree programs. Many of the master's degree programs are also offered at the doctorate level, except for principal leadership and student affairs. Students entering the Teacher Education Program may specialize in multiple subjects, such as English, mathematics, music, science, and social science. In addition, the Teacher Education Program offers a residency program in urban education. The university is home to a plethora of research centers, as well as the UCLA Lab School, formerly known as the Corinne A. Seeds University Elementary School.

University of Southern California

Located in Los Angeles, the University of Southern California was ranked as having the 17th best education school in the nation in 2013, by U.S. News and World Report. The university offers six master's degree programs in education, including a Master of Arts in Teaching and a Master of Arts in Learning Design and Technology that are offered completely online. Additionally, the Master of Arts in Teaching provides areas of concentration in elementary education, secondary education, special education, Gifted and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Students may pursue a Master of Education in student affairs, educational counseling, and learning design and technology. Lastly, the university is home to multiple research centers, as well as strong urban education programs.
