Media Production Schools in Florida with Degree Program Summaries

There are more than 15 schools within Florida that have media production programs. Read an overview of ten of the largest schools' programs, requirements, and tuition info and find out which school is the right one for you.

Essential Information

Career fields in media production are diverse and span traditional broadcasting, filmmaking, videography, digital media, and new media. In Florida, students can pursue certificates, associate's degrees, bachelor's degrees, or master's degrees in media production or a related area. Certificate and associate's degree programs are the most common. Several programs have additional specializations. In some cases, students will need a previous degree to gain access to a program. Students may also get the opportunity to put together a portfolio. The following ten schools represent the largest public and private non-profit schools in the state offering relevant programs.


Broward College

Located in the city of Fort Lauderdale, Broward College opened in 1960 as part of a growing state college system. Students can pursue an Associate of Science in Digital Media/Multimedia Technology, with program coursework covering digital publishing, Web development, 3-D animation, and digital post-production. Broward also offers technical certificates in digital media web production and digital media/multimedia production.

Florida State College at Jacksonville

The Jacksonville campus of this state college was established in 1965. While the college primarily offers associate's degrees, students can pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science in Digital Media. The program includes lower division courses that cover digital video, streaming, computer animation, and recording techniques. Upper division courses include topics such as visual storytelling, interface design, artificial effects, and advanced 3-D animation. Students can also pursue an Associate in Science degree in digital media/multimedia technology or enroll in one of several technical certificate programs in digital media production.

Florida State University

In the capital city of Tallahassee, Florida State University was originally planned in 1823 by territorial legislature. Today, the university's College of Motion Picture Arts offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Animation and Digital Arts or Production. The animation and digital arts program includes courses covering trans-media storytelling, as well as sound, lighting, and camera usage. The production program features courses on filmmaking, cinematography, editing, and screenwriting. Graduate students can pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Production that covers production management, film editing, directing, and aesthetics.

Indian River State College

Situated in Fort Pierce Indian River State College was founded more than 50 years ago. Students here can pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science in Digital Media and specialize in graphic design and visual communication or animation, gaming, and modeling. Graphics and Web students create a portfolio, while video and gaming students can gain hands-on experience in all stages of the game design process. Modeling and simulation students have the opportunity to build animated 3-D environments and models. To apply to one of the programs, applicants must already possess an associate's degree.

Miami Dade College

Upon the school's 1960 opening in Miami, Miami Dade College became the first integrated junior college in Florida. Through the School of Entertainment and Design Technology, students can pursue an Associate in Science degree in film production technology, radio and television broadcasting or an Associate in Arts degree in computer arts animation. These programs can be used as career preparation or as groundwork for transfer to a film or media production program, such as the school's Bachelor of Applied Science in Film, Television, and Digital Production. This program includes courses on film production, visual communication, television studio production, and video composition.

Palm Beach State College

The suburb of Lake Worth is home to Palm Beach State College, a public institution founded in 1933. Students can pursue an Associate in Science in Motion Picture Production Technology, through a program that includes required courses in editing, directing, production design, and cinematography. A wide number of electives are also available, in areas such as independent film and TV production, acting, writing for broadcast, feature film production, and film history.

St. Petersburg College

St. Petersburg College, located in the city of Clearwater, opened its doors to students in 1927. Students can pursue an Associate in Science in Digital Arts, Media, and Interactive Web Design. Program courses may include topics such as game development, digital imaging, electronic media design, videography, studio production, 3-D animation, scripting, and digital media authoring management. The college also offers five related 12-15-credit certificate programs with credits that can transfer to the associate's program.

Seminole State College of Florida

The Sanford area is home to Seminole State College of Florida, which opened its doors in 1966. The school offers certificate and associate's degree programs in digital media and related specialization areas. Students can earn a 15-24-credit certificate in digital media, with a specialization in digital media/multimedia production, graphic design support, or graphic design production as well as entertainment design. A 12-credit certificate in digital and interactive media design is also available. Those seeking a formal associate's degree program can study general digital media or select a specialization in Web or graphic design. Students can also focus their studies on graphics technology or television and cinema production through associate's programs in these disciplines.

University of Central Florida

The city of Orlando is home to the University of Central Florida, a public institution that opened in 1968. Undergraduate and graduate students can pursue degrees in media production specialty areas, including a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media with concentrations in game design or web design. Through the Center for Emerging Media, students can pursue programs at the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, including a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art - emerging media track, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film, and a Master of Science in Interactive Entertainment.

Graduate students can also pursue a Master of Arts in Digital Media, a Master of Fine Arts in Emerging Media with a digital media track, or an entrepreneurial digital cinema track through the School of Visual Arts and Design.

Valencia College

A public college located in the city of Orlando, Valencia College opened in 1967. Students can pursue an associate's degree program in digital media technology, with specialization options in live event video production, mobile journalism, video and motion graphics, or web development. They can also choose an Associate in Science in Entertainment Design and Technology, with a specialization in live show production or production design, as well as an Associate in Science in Film Production Technology.
