Essential Information

Medical billing and/or coding programs are offered at the undergraduate certificate level and may take 7-12 months to complete. Associate's degree programs in health information technology can also offer training in this field. These programs prepare students for performing tasks such as keeping patient records, inputting patient information into computer systems and understanding disease classification systems. Applicants may be required to pass a typing test and may need to complete certain prerequisite courses.

Although certification is not required to work in the medical billing field in the United States, employers often prefer candidates with certification. Certification for medical billing specialists is available through organizations such as the Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), which offers the Certified Professional Biller (CPB) credential, and the National Healthcare Association (NHA), which confers Billing and Coding Specialist Certification (CBCS).
