CUNY Queensborough Community College

CUNY Queensborough Community College offers certificate and associate's degree programs for students who are interested in careers in accounting, medical and health care office administration, nursing and management, among other areas.

Medical Office Assistant Certificate

The medical office assistant certificate program requires 30 credits to complete and helps students acquire medical secretary and clinical procedural skills. Once enrolled, students learn about clinical testing, public health, medical office procedures and typing. The program also provides students with opportunities for field training.

Health Care Office Administration: Managing Coding and Billing Certificate

Students in this 30-credit program receive instruction in general and medical office skills. They also learn about medical coding and billing, office procedures and computer systems. Courses in human physiology and anatomy, medical ethics and terminology and public disease management are also part of the program. Qualified graduates receive a certificate of completion and are prepared to pursue careers as billing specialists, medical assistants or claims examiners.

Associate in Applied Science in Medical Office Assistant

The medical office assistant program is 60 credits in length and builds upon the 30-credit certificate program. Students in the associate's degree program take additional courses in medical administrative and clinical procedures. The associate's degree program also covers topics in medical coding and billing, EKG technology, phlebotomy technology and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Metropolitan Learning Institute

The Metropolitan Learning Institute has two campuses in New York and New Jersey. The New York campus in Queens offers programs in computer technology, accounting assistant and medical administrative assistant. Several concentrations are available within the computer technology program, including one that focuses on medical billing.

Computer Office Technology with Medical Billing and ESL Certificate

This program takes 15 months to complete and provides students with 600 hours of English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. In addition to basic computer technology, students receive hands-on medical office training. Courses cover topics in medical terminology, office procedures, transcription and insurance billing.

Medical Administrative Assistant Certificate

The medical administrative assistant certificate program consists of 1,500 hours of coursework. Students spend 300 hours learning about medical terminology and 300 hours focusing on computer software. About 750 hours of coursework are spent on medical office work and business math. During this portion of the program, students learn about medical billing software packages and clinical procedures. Business communications and human resources are the primary focus for 150 hours of the program.

Manhattan School of Computer Technology

The Manhattan School of Computer Technology provides students with the knowledge and training needed to work in the medical field. Graduates have the opportunity to pursue careers in medical billing and coding, medical transcription, nursing and phlebotomy.

Medical Office Specialist Certificate

Students can earn the medical office specialist certificate in 60 weeks. Administrative courses teach students about keyboarding, business math, accounting and office procedures. Students also take courses in medical terminology, transcription and insurance; anatomy and physiology; clinical practices and electrocardiography. The program includes a 375-hour internship.
