Essential Information

The University of Colorado Denver operates the only not-for-profit medical school in Colorado. Students may earn one of two types of doctoral degrees and choose among six tracks. Their education will include classroom instruction, lab training, internships, and clinical clerkships. A capstone project is also required.

Career Requirements

The Colorado Medical Board is responsible for licensing physicians in the state. To become a licensed medical doctor, an individual must graduate from medical school, complete post-graduate training and pass a nationally approved exam, such as the United States Medical Licensing Examination.

University of Colorado Denver

This university is located in Denver and offers a variety of medicine-based programs at its Anschutz Medical campus.

The university's Doctor of Medicine program requires four years of study. The first two phases of this program consist of coursework delivered through lectures, lab work, small group discussions and team learning sessions. The third and fourth phases of this program include clinical clerkships, coursework and internships. During the fourth phase, students complete and present a capstone project as well. Students may elect to follow one of six tracks, which include research, global health, rural health, underserved populations, leadership and women's care.

The university offers a dual degree program that allows students to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy degree in medical scientist training to complement the Doctor of Medicine degree program. This dual program includes a mix of graduate and medical school coursework.
