Programs are three years in length, and include practicums, an internship, and/or a dissertation prior to graduation.

University of Utah

Classes in the program, some of which are available online, cover topics like group counseling, sexual counseling, lifespan development and substance abuse counseling. Prior to graduation, students must pass the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination.

Career Requirements

Utah requires that all clinical mental health counselors be licensed by the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing prior to working in the state. To become a licensed clinical mental health counselor in Utah, an individual must possess a master's or doctoral degree in the field from a program accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) or a program that's recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation that satisfies state-established minimum education requirements. Additionally, an individual must have completed 4,000 hours of supervised experience and passed the National Counseling Examination and National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination.

The two mental health counseling degree programs offered by schools in Utah aren't CACREP accredited. However, their curriculum is typically designed to meet state requirements and thereby prepare an individual for licensure.
