Drake University

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Drake University helps candidates acquire certification as a licensed Mental Health Counselor in Iowa. The diverse curriculum provides students with a solid grasp of several essential concepts and ideas.

Master of Science in Counseling (Concentration in Clinical Mental Health Counseling)

Students pursuing the clinical mental health counseling concentration must complete 60 credit hours, including 33 credits of core courses and 27 credits in the mental health counseling track. Some courses in the mental health counseling core include counseling research, methods and procedures of counseling, career development and occupational information, theoretical foundations classes, assessment of individual and family, group procedures, human development and life issues, psychopathology and psychiatric disabilities and ethics for counselors. Students also complete a counseling practicum, an advanced practicum and an internship. Graduates of the program must take the examination to become Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC) in Iowa.

The mental health counseling program trains students for positions in various settings, such as hospitals, group practices, residential treatment centers, assistance programs, substance abuse treatment centers and community mental health centers. Drake offers evening and weekend classes throughout the year, in addition to classes in online or video conferencing formats, in order to accommodate working professionals. The Master of Science in Counseling degree program offers students the flexibility of choosing more than one specialization or changing or adding specializations during the course of the program.
