Paine College

A small, private liberal arts institution, Paine College was founded in 1882. The school is located in the heart of Augusta and its Department of Social Sciences (within the School of Arts and Sciences) offers the psychology program.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with an Emphasis in Counseling

In preparation for further education or professional development, the program aims to prepare students with a knowledge base, research methods, critical thinking skills and tools for psychological application. The first semester begins with an introduction to psychology, which delves into basic behavioral and development issues, emotion, intelligence and social stimuli. In terms of mental health counseling preparation, the introduction to counseling course provides students with a fundamental lesson in counseling techniques, both traditional and contemporary. The program progresses to topics such as experimental psychology, behavior modification, abnormal psychology and personality theory. Three research projects are required, which involves a research paper and an oral presentation.

Augusta University

Augusta University's roots date back to 1828, as it is comprised of several colleges formerly housed in Augusta State University and the Georgia Health Sciences University. It is one of only four comprehensive research universities in the state. Formerly it was named Georgia Regents University.

Master of Education in Counselor Education - Clinical Mental Health Counseling

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program, offered through the College of Education, is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, fulfilling Georgia education requirements for the Licensed Professional Counselor credential. Program coursework may include topics such as career development, marriage and family counseling, gender issues, pharmacology, clinical assessment and diversity sensitivity. The 60-credit-hour program will include six hours of clinical internship experience in a community environment.

Applicants to this competitive program should meet a series of admission requirements. In addition to assessment and standardized test scores, individuals should submit an essay and three letters of recommendation, demonstrate proficiency in technology and writing through an in-person assignment and commit to being interviewed.
