Students interested in studying merchandising in Hawaii may choose to earn a certificate, associate's degree, or bachelor's degree from one of two schools. Program lengths range from less than two years to four years, depending on the program and school. Such retail sales-related programs may include an internship opportunity or field study.
There are 16 public and private-not-for profit schools within the state of Hawaii. Kapiolani Community College and the University of Hawaii at Manoa are the only schools in Hawaii that offer training programs related to merchandising.
Kapiolani Community College
Kapiolani Community College is a two-year, public school located in the Diamond Head region of Honolulu. The school, which was founded in 1964, offers 47 programs of study for prospective students interested in pursuing a certificate or associate's degree. Undergraduate enrollment at the school averages more than 7,000 students annually with a student-to-faculty ratio of 18 to 1.
The Associate in Science in Marketing teaches students about the principles and practices of merchandising management, marketing, retailing and customer service. Focus is on learning about standard retail business practices and providing students with an understanding of the strategies and techniques used in the industry. An internship program is completed during the last semester, which provides students with the opportunity to engage their acquired knowledge and skills within a hands-on work environment. Certificate programs related to merchandising are also available.
University of Hawaii at Manoa
Located just outside Hawaii's capital of Honolulu on a 320-acre campus, the University of Hawaii at Manoa is a four-year, public institution serving more than 19,000 students. The school was founded in 1907 and is the oldest and largest institution within the University of Hawaii System, which consists of three universities and seven community colleges. The merchandising program is available through the Department of Fashion Design and Merchandising and features five faculty members and seven lecturers.
The 120-credit Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design and Merchandising (FDM) program offers students the choice of pursuing an emphasis in apparel product design or merchandising. Students pursuing a different degree program other than one focusing on FDM have the option of declaring a minor in merchandising with faculty advisor approval. Core department courses within the merchandising emphasis focus on financial accounting, sales management, consumer behavior, professionals selling and marketing. The curriculum also includes a field study in fashion.
