Makeup School Options in Miami
Makeup classes in the Miami area are largely offered through community college and technical school cosmetology programs. This article examines three schools, none more than half an hour from downtown Miami, and the training programs they offer. Information about these schools that could be useful to prospective students, such as enrollment and costs, is presented in a table. At the end of the article are the names of a few other Miami-area schools that offer relevant programs.
- The English Center - Miami-Dade County Public Schools is about four miles from downtown Miami. It offers makeup classes through two certificate programs, one in facials and the other in cosmetology.
- The Miami Lakes Educational Center and Technical College is around 11 miles from Miami's downtown. Its cosmetology program also includes training in makeup application.
- A facials specialty and esthetician training program is available at the Sheridan Technical College. This school is 17 miles from Miami's city center.

The English Center - Miami-Dade County Public Schools
This technical education center offers training courses and certificate programs to students who would like to brush up on their reading, writing and math skills or enter a new career field. Coursework for the following programs can help students meet prerequisites for licensure through the Florida State Board of Cosmetology.
Facials Specialty Certificate of Completion
Students who enroll in this specialty certificate program can learn about makeup application in addition to such treatments as facials, eyebrow shaping and hair removal. Other topics of study include client preparation, product selection, management skills, professional ethics, safety and sanitation. This program takes 260 clock hours to complete.
Cosmetology Certificate of Completion
This cosmetology program totals 1,200 clock hours in length. Makeup application is just one area of study. Students also learn about nail technology, hair care and skin care. They receive additional instruction in the financial and managerial skills needed to work in the cosmetology industry.
Miami Lakes Educational Center and Technical College
In addition to adult education programs, this school offers training to high school students. Available areas of study include dental assisting, automobile technology, practical nursing and appliance repair.
This program features an open-entry policy, which allows students to begin their studies at any point while school is in session. It generally takes 14 months of full-time study to complete requirements for this 1,200-clock-hour program. Topics of study include the art of makeup, cosmetology law in Florida, work safety, hair treatments and manicuring techniques. Coursework prepares students to pass the state cosmetology licensing examination.
Sheridan Technical College
Sheridan Technical College offers a wide variety of career training programs. Instruction in its cosmetology and spa service programs is designed to prepare students for state cosmetology licensing exams.
Facials Specialty and Esthetician Training Program
Students enrolled in this training program complete 260 clock hours of instruction. Coursework is appropriate for those interested in providing makeup, facial massage and skin care services to clients in spas or beauty salons. In addition to completing lecture courses, students are able to acquire experience with industry equipment and chemicals during lab sessions.
Other School Options
Situated less than two miles from the heart of downtown Miami is Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center. It offers makeup classes as part of a manicurist and pedicurist specialist program. Students can also learn about makeup in the facials specialty and cosmetology certificate programs at the Robert Morgan Educational Center, which is about 22 miles from Miami's downtown.
