History and Overview of Montgomery College
Montgomery College is a 2-year, public institution in Maryland that offers associate's degree and certificate programs, as well as continuing education and professional enrichment courses. Since its founding over 50 years ago, the school has added two campuses and several online course options for its students.
The Early Years
Montgomery College was founded on September 16, 1946. The college, known then as Montgomery Junior College, originally offered evening and Saturday classes at the local Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. The entire student population at that time was only 186.
The school's first campus was erected in 1950 in Takoma Park/Silver Spring, MD. A second campus, located in Rockville, MD, opened its doors in the fall of 1965. A third campus, situated in Germantown, MD, started classes at a temporary site in September 1975 before moving to its current location in 1978.
The College Today
The school now has a total enrollment of close to 60,000 students. At Montgomery College, students can currently choose from credit and non-credit programs in over 100 fields of study. Courses are designed to prepare students to either enter the workforce upon graduation, fulfill professional development and continuing education requirements, or transfer credits to an undergraduate degree program at a 4-year college or university. Programs of study include accounting, interior design, engineering technology, graphic design, information technology, writing and photography.
Remote Study Options
Montgomery College also offers online courses through its Ed2Go program. Classes are offered in hybrid and fully online formats. While fully online courses are completed without any in-person class meetings, hybrid classes are completed partially on campus and partially online. The school's online courses generally last for six weeks. Areas of study include web design, digital photography and computer skills. Self-enrichment, continuing education and professional development courses are available as well. Topics include health care, construction and GED preparation.
