Atlanta and its surrounding areas have multiple school options for individuals interested in obtaining an education in multimedia. This article looks at three schools within 30 minutes of downtown and the relevant programs they offer. Program titles may fall under various names, but the ones profiled include multimedia courses and instruction. Important information about the schools, such as enrollment and tuition, is disclosed in a table that might be useful to prospective students.   • The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), only four miles from the heart of downtown, offers a bachelor's degree in computational media and a dual bachelor's/master's degree in computational media and digital media. It also has Master of Science and doctoral programs in digital media.
  • Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), has a campus in Atlanta about five miles from downtown. It offers Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees in animation, motion media design and visual effects as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in digital media.

Georgia Institute of Technology

Georgia Tech conducts a high amount of research in its 100 centers, and it was ranked #36 on U.S. News and World Report's list of best colleges for 2016. The multimedia-related bachelor's and joint bachelor's-master's degree programs are offered through a partnership with the College of Computing and the School of Literature, Communication and Culture. The graduate programs in digital media are offered through the School of Literature, Media and Communication.

Bachelor of Science in Computational Media

This program provides a comprehensive overview of the computer's various uses as well as visual design and digital media concepts. All students in this program take computer science classes that cover topics such as object-oriented programming, algorithms and data structures. The program requires students to customize their educations by choosing two concentration options called threads. Students select both a computer science-related thread and a thread in literature media and communication (LMC). Computer-science-related threads include media, intelligence or people. LMC threads include film, performance and media; game studies, interaction design and experimental studies; or narratives.

Bachelor of Science/ Master of Science in Computational Media and Digital Media

Before students are considered for this program, they must complete 75 credits in the computational media bachelor's program and earn at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Students begin taking graduate-level coursework in their 4th year, and they're also required to complete an internship during the summer after their final undergraduate year. Students can complete the remaining 24 credits during their 5th year, which includes a thesis or project.

Master of Science in Digital Media

In this 36-credit-hour program, there are three required courses that cover interactive design, digital media and computer usage, as well as two required studio courses. Students choose 15 credits of electives covering topics like multimedia design for the Web, new media applications and emerging media. Program requirements also include either a 6-credit thesis or a project. After the first year, students complete a non-credit summer internship.

Doctor of Philosophy in Digital Media

This program is geared toward individuals who want to conduct research in the digital media field. In addition to the requirements for the master's program, students must complete a portfolio review, comprehensive exams, a PhD thesis and defense and a qualifying exam.

Savannah College of Art and Design

SCAD's flagship campus is located in Savannah, GA, but it also has locations in Atlanta; LaCoste, France; and Hong Kong. Distance-learning options are also available. This school offers a broad range of programs that could interest aspiring multimedia artists. These programs primarily can be found within the School of Digital Media.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Animation

This program comprises 180 credits, which include 60 hours of general education classes, like modern art and oral communication, as well as foundational courses in the areas of drawing, design and color theory. Students also complete 75 credits of major-related coursework, such as 2-D animation, 3-D animation, screen design and animation history. Two senior project courses also are required.

Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media

Students in this program can choose to concentrate in either game development or interactive design. In both options, students complete 25 credits of foundation courses and 90 credits of general education courses. Students take another 45 credits of concentration-related courses. In the game development option, classes may cover topics like computer programming languages, interactive design and game design analysis. In the interactive design concentration, students may take classes in typography, Web design and digital design.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Motion Media Design

This program comprises 35 credits of foundational classes, 65 credits of general education classes, 70 credits of major classes and ten credits of electives. Major-related courses include typography, storyboards and motion media design techniques. Additionally, students are required to complete two project courses that result in a senior project showcasing production abilities.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Effects

In addition to the 95 credits of foundation and general education classes, students complete 75 credits of core courses. Some of these classes include matte painting, visual effects programming and compositing. Students also complete a visual effects project as part of their studio coursework.

Master of Fine Arts in Animation

This master's program consists of 90 credits, which include classes that cover topics such as character development and movement, gesture drawing and animation environments. A 2-D collaborative project course requires students to develop an animated mini-movie using conventional media, and a 3-D collaborative project course requires students to create an animated narrative using computer media. A teaching or field internship is also required.

Master of Fine Arts in Motion Media Design

This 90-credit program includes required courses like contemporary art and dynamic typography as well as electives. Two studio classes provide students opportunities to work on their theses, and they also complete a teaching or field internship.

Master of Fine Arts in Visual Effects

Some of the required elective courses in this 90-credit program include filmmaking, visual effects, 3-D special effects, 3-D modeling and digital compositing. Students also complete an internship and a thesis.

Chattahoochee Technical College

In addition to the Marietta campus of Chattahoochee Technical College, there are seven other campuses throughout the state. CTC is part of the Technical College System of Georgia and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Diploma in Design and Media Production Technology

Students must earn 51-55 credits to complete this diploma program. Major-related classes introduce students to basic design techniques, computer concepts, typography, vector graphics and image-editing software. Other core classes differ according to the student's chosen concentration; options include graphic design and prepress, Web interface design, motion graphics and computer animation.

Students in the graphic design and prepress concentration take classes like page layout and publication design. The Web interface design option includes classes in animation and Web design, and the motion graphics concentration includes classes in video editing, 3-D modeling and video production. Classes in the computer animation option cover topics like animated character development, animation software and 3-D computer graphics.

Associate of Applied Science in Design and Media Production Technology

This program is similar to the diploma program, except that it requires 66 credits to complete. Students complete the same general education and core major classes as in the diploma program; however, students must complete additional classes, depending on their chosen specialization areas. Internships also are required in the graphic design and prepress and motion graphics options.

Other Schools

Morehouse College, a 4-year private college in Atlanta, allows students in the visual arts bachelor's program to study multimedia. About 43 miles outside of Atlanta in Oakwood, GA, Lanier Technical College has both a diploma program and a degree in design and media production technology. The school also offers certificate programs relevant to the multimedia field, such as graphic design and prepress, digital illustration, advertising layout specialist and design and media production specialist.
