Naturopathic medicine adheres to the philosophy that ailments and disease can be treated naturally, without synthetic drugs and with proper diet and exercise and other alternative practices, such as acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

Undergraduate- and graduate-level programs are available in this field and some schools offer dual degree options. Three of the best places to learn about naturopathic medicine are the University of Bridgeport, Bastyr University and the National University of Natural Medicine. Students may pursue a doctoral degree in the field from each of these universities, and they all provide an accredited, comprehensive education that covers many topics related to naturopathic medicine.

1. University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, CT

The University of Bridgeport in Connecticut is a private school that offers a 4-year Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (N.D.) track, which is accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education. Here, students learning about naturopathy take foundational classes in nutrition, anatomy, physiology, biology and chemistry. More focused studies in this discipline include courses in homeopathy, Oriental medicine, hydrotherapy and botanical medicine.

2. Bastyr University in Kenmore, WA

Individuals interested in naturopathy training can pursue a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (N.D.) or a dual N.D./Master of Science (M.S.) in Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture at Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington. Doctoral students gain a minimum of 1,200 clinical training hours in the Seattle-based Bastyr Center for Natural Health.

Bastyr also has a campus in San Diego, California.

3. National University of Natural Medicine

Starting in 2016, the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon, began offering Bachelor of Science programs in integrative health sciences and nutrition, in addition to a wide variety of graduate-level options. These include a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine and a Doctor of Science in Oriental Medicine program, as well as Master of Science programs in Oriental medicine, global health, integrative medicine research, integrative mental health and nutrition.

These master's degree programs range in length from nine months to four years.
