North Carolina doesn't have any schools with programs dedicated to naturopathy. However, there are many similar programs, including acupuncture and massage therapy, that are offered throughout the state. Such programs include many hours of hands-on training in their respective arts, and some include clinical experiences, co-ops, or internships.

Career Requirements

Licensure is necessary to become a practicing massage therapist or acupuncturist in North Carolina. Each of the therapeutic massage or acupuncture programs discussed below prepare graduates to take licensing exams and apply for licensure in their respective field.

Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College

More than 8,000 undergraduate students are enrolled at this Asheville school. The school offers an associate's degree and diploma in therapeutic massage. Anatomy, physiology and interpersonal communication are part of the general education curriculum for the associate's program. Additional coursework includes pathophysiology, fundamentals of massage, therapeutic massage applications and general psychology. Clinical and co-op experiences are also part of the curriculum. Graduates of the program are prepared to take the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) exam and the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx).

Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts

Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts, located in Asheville, has a mission to advance Chinese medicine rooted in classical techniques. A master's degree in acupuncture and oriental medicine is offered at the school. The four-year degree program explores traditional practices and modern teachings. During the first two years, students learn about garden care and herbs, and they take a clinical observation class. The program also requires students to receive 24 acupuncture treatments during this time. Before students begin their third year of study, they must be certified in CPR and first aid by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. During the last two years of the program, students participate in a clinical internship and a clinical case review.

Davidson Community College

Thomasville's Davidson Community College has more than 4,000 undergraduate students enrolled. A diploma and an associate's degree program in therapeutic massage are available. The diploma program is offered yearly, while the Associate of Applied Science program is only available as needed. Sample courses for the associate's program include massage fundamentals, therapeutic massage applications and ethics of massage. The program also requires additional supporting courses in nutrition, pathophysiology, basic anatomy and interpersonal communication. Graduates of the program are prepared for the MBLEx.

Forsyth Technical Community College

There are more than 10,000 students enrolled at Winston Salem's Forsyth Technical Community College. The school offers associate's degree, diploma and certificate programs in therapeutic massage. The diploma and certificate programs are available in daytime and evening formats. The core curriculum of each program covers therapeutic massage techniques and professional ethics, and students participate in clinical experiences. Additional courses in the diploma and associate's degree programs include anatomy and physiology, principles of management, human relations and advanced massage.

Gaston College

Dallas' Gaston College enrolls more than 6,000 students throughout three campuses. Students interested in a career in therapeutic massage can enroll in the school's diploma or associate's degree programs. During the first year of study in the two-year associate's program, students learn about anatomy and physiology, expository writing, small business management and clinical techniques. In the second year, students learn the tenets of medical terminology, pathophysiology, outcome-based massage, yoga and developmental psychology.

Johnston Community College

Smithfield's Johnston Community College offers associate's degrees, diplomas and certificate programs. The therapeutic massage diploma program is made up of two semesters and a summer session. During the first semester, students take courses in basic anatomy and physiology, massage fundamentals, ethics of massage and general psychology. The second semester focuses on expository writing, therapeutic massage applications and clinical experience. The final session includes one argument-based research course.

Jung Tao School of Classical Chinese Medicine

Jung Tao School of Classical Chinese Medicine is a non-profit institution in Sugar Grove. The school solely offers a graduate-level diploma in acupuncture. The program takes four years to complete and combines principles of classic Chinese medicine with the tenets of Western medicine. Students develop their five senses to aid in diagnosing a range of illnesses and pathologies. They also learn acupuncture theories and techniques and hone their clinical treatment skills. Prior to graduation, students complete a 600-hour internship, where 50 hours per month are dedicated to clinical practice.

Pitt Community College

Pitt Community College instructs over 8,000 students at its Winterville campus. The school offers a diploma and associate's program in therapeutic massage. Students are required to take courses in basic anatomy and physiology, therapeutic massage methods, massage ethics and general psychology. The diploma program is a prerequisite for admission to the associate's program. Graduates of either program can sit for the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam or the NCBTMB exam.

Sandhills Community College

Sandhills Community College serves over 4,000 undergraduate students in Pinehurst. The therapeutic massage associate's and diploma programs include lectures, labs and clinical experiences. Students complete coursework in massage applications, massage skills and medical terminology, and both programs include a clinical practicum. In the last semester of the associate's program, students participate in a cooperative work experience.

Wake Technical Community College

Raleigh's Wake Technical Community College offers a 42-credit-hour diploma in therapeutic massage. The curriculum covers nutrition, management principles, anatomy and physiology, small business management and professional ethics. A clinical practicum is included.
