Students seeking training that can lead to school business administrator certification have few program options in New Jersey. Graduate certificate and master's degree programs are offered for students interested in this field. These programs focus on developing leadership and organizational skills for school business administrators.

Some of the master's degree programs require applicants to hold teacher certification in New Jersey, have a few years of teaching experience, and/or have completed specific course prerequisites. Certificate programs might require the completion of a master's program or other certifications before enrolling. Some programs offer online or blended studies. Students may need to participate in field experiences during their programs.

Georgian Court University

Lakewood's Georgian Court University provides prospective students with the opportunity to earn a master's degree in administration and leadership, which fulfills the school business administrator certification requirements of the state. Graduates also qualify for school principal certification. Students are specifically trained to be educational administrators for an inclusive school district. The 36-credit program includes courses in curricular and organizational leadership, school law and financial management, and can be completed on-campus or online. In addition to the general admission requirements applicable to all graduate programs, applicants must also hold standard teaching certificate in New Jersey and have three years of full-time teaching experience.

Kean University

Located in Union, Kean University offers students a master's degree in educational administration for school business administrators and a post master's degree certification program for school business administrators through the Nathan Weiss Graduate College. The master's degree program satisfies New Jersey's educational requirements for school business administrators and is approved by the state, though upon graduation, students must complete the mentorship requirements to obtain official certification. The program includes 33 credits of coursework, fieldwork experience and a comprehensive exam. A cumulative GPA of 3.0, GRE scores and two letters of recommendation, in addition to other documents, are required to gain admission to the program.

The post master's degree program is approved by the state and satisfies the educational requirements for the CE. To enter the program, students must hold a master's degree, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, hold a Standard Instructional or Educational Services Certificate with two years of professional experience and submit transcripts, a personal statement and a resume. The entire program consists of 24 credits of coursework, including six credits of administration and supervision fieldwork. The program's general classes include training in accounting, building planning, school law and educational finance management.

Career Requirements

In order to work as a provisional school business administrator in New Jersey, all applicants must hold a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) granted by the state. To earn a CE, applicants must hold a master's degree or higher from an accredited institution or a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license. In addition, all applicants must have at least 18 semester hours of coursework in economics, organizational theory, law, management, accounting and finance at either the undergraduate or graduate level.

Once these requirements are met, an applicant must work for two years under a state-approved residency and mentoring program. Upon completion of this requirement, applicants will be issued a standard certificate that grants them permanent certification. The schools profiled below represent the only schools in New Jersey that offer school business administrator certification programs.
