New York University

New York University (NYU) is a 4-year private institution that enrolls nearly 45,000 students each year. The university offers numerous programs at both the graduate and undergraduate levels that prepare students for teacher certification.

Bachelor of Science in Childhood Education and Childhood Special Education

This program prepares students to earn dual certification in standard childhood education and childhood special education, qualifying graduates to teach in either type of environment and work with children in grades 1-6. A total of 137 credits must be completed, with courses including human development, multiple and moderate disabilities, reading instruction and elementary mathematics. Seminars and student teaching experiences are incorporated as well. Students also choose a 30-credit liberal arts concentration, such as history, science or psychology.

Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Special Education

Like the childhood education program, this program offers a dual certification option, both in standard classroom environments and in special education. Graduates are qualified to teach children from birth to second grade. The program requires the completion of 134 credits with professional education courses similar to those in the childhood education program, along with 30 credits of a liberal arts concentration, seminars and student teaching. NYU also offers master's degree and doctorate programs in this field.

Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education Subjects

NYU students have several educational options when it comes to teacher certification for the 7th-12th grades. Students can earn their bachelor's degrees and prepare for secondary teacher certification in science, social studies, English and mathematics. A degree in foreign language instruction is also available in languages such as Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese and Japanese. These programs require 128-130 units of study for completion, depending on the specific topic studied. Professional education courses are combined with subject-specific material. Master's and doctorate degrees can also be pursued in each of these fields.

Master of Arts in Education

NYU offers numerous education programs that result in a master's degree. Students can earn a Master of Arts degree in childhood education, early childhood education or specific subjects such as English, science, mathematics and social studies. Degrees in literacy and special education are also available, along with subjects like art, music and dance.

Doctor of Philosophy in Education

Ph.D. programs are available in almost every topic covered by NYU's bachelor's and master's degree programs. Those who complete this type of doctorate often pursue careers in educational research or school administration.

University at Buffalo

The University at Buffalo is a 4-year, public institution that is home to more than 29,000 students annually. The school's College of Graduate Education provides several teacher certification programs for graduate students.

Graduate Certification

The University at Buffalo offers several graduate certification programs which prepare students for initial teacher certification. Many of these, notably the adolescent education programs in various subjects, allow students to prepare certification separately from a graduate degree or in combination with a master's degree. Some subjects, such as school counseling, educational administration and adolescent science, do not allow the combination of the two. Buffalo also offers an online gifted education certification program.

Master of Education in Childhood Education

This program prepares students for teacher certification for grades 1-6 with a humanities, science or social science major. The program can be individualized further, as students can pursue a bilingual specialization or an emphasis in literacy. Coursework includes elementary instruction in science, social science and mathematics, as well as classes in childhood literacy, literacy instruction and assessment. Field experience, student teaching and a capstone project are also included in the curriculum.

Master of Education in Early Childhood Education

Students who complete this program are prepared to become certified to teach children from birth to the second grade. Alternatively, a slightly different Master of Education program prepares graduates to be certified from birth to the sixth grade. Coursework for both programs includes standard subject instruction with a focus on infant and toddler education and teaching to younger students. Students must participate in field experience and student teaching, and must complete a capstone project.

Master of Education in Secondary/Adolescent Education

This is a group of degree programs which are individually undertaken by aspiring secondary education teachers, divided by subject of interest. Students can prepare to become certified to teach grades 7-12 or grades 5-12. Subjects of specialization include English, mathematics, social studies, chemistry, biology, earth science and physics. Foreign languages, such as German, French, Spanish and Latin, are also available as options. Unlike the childhood and early childhood education programs, students on this path must earn their master's degree and achieve teacher certification separately.

Doctorate Degrees in Education

The University at Buffalo offers several doctorate degrees in the realm of learning and instruction for those who have already achieved teacher certification. Elementary education, special education, science and mathematics are available subjects for a doctoral concentration, as are reading, English education and foreign language education.
