Southwest Tennessee Community College

Southwest Tennessee Community College offers academic and career training through associate's degree and certificate programs. The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Nursing is offered for students who have no prior experience and for applicants who are currently working as licensed practical nurses. Graduates of both programs are eligible to sit for the national RN licensing examination.

Associate of Applied Science in Nursing

This program provides two possible course sequences - a generic track and an LPN mobility track. Many topics are covered in both tracks, including family clinical nursing, adult health nursing, pediatric care, mental health nursing and nursing management. Hands-on clinical experiences are required as well.

Tennessee College of Applied Technology

Tennessee College of Applied Technology offers career training programs in several areas, including avionics, automotive technology, dental assisting, pharmacy technology, drafting and electronics technology. The practical nursing certificate program prepares students for the State Board of Nursing Exam.

Practical Nursing Diploma

Students in the practical nursing diploma program learn through classroom study, laboratory work and clinical experiences. The 3-trimester program includes 1,296 contact hours and teaches students how to provide basic care to patients, take vital signs and give injections.

University of Memphis

The University of Memphis comprises 11 schools and colleges and offers a wide range of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The University of Memphis' Loewenberg School of Nursing has both undergraduate and graduate nursing programs.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

The curriculum for this 4-year degree program includes maternal and newborn nursing, clinical pathophysiology, nursing pharmacology, health assessment, pediatric nursing, mental health nursing and gerontological nursing. Students develop nursing skills through clinical rotations and learn about contemporary nursing issues.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program also offers an option to registered nurses (RNs) who wish to earn their bachelor's degrees. This option, known as the RN-to-BSN, allows students to take courses online and participate in clinical experiences at sites close to their homes. An accelerated BSN program is offered to students who already have a bachelor's degree in a non-nursing field.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

Students pursuing the MSN can choose areas of concentration, including nursing administration, nursing education and executive leadership and family nurse practitioner. Core courses in the MSN curriculum include advanced nursing research and healthcare policy.

Required courses vary depending on the chosen area of concentration and may include nursing management, nursing administration, nursing education theories, health care systems and advanced health assessment. The executive leadership MSN concentration is designed for students seeking leadership roles in nursing, and specialty courses are provided in health care finance, nursing leadership practices, nursing executive accountability, patient care financial management and patient care delivery.
