Essential Information

There are typically two career-entry paths for individuals who wish to become nurses: Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). Available training programs in nursing are available at the associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree levels at the Indiana schools below. Some of the admissions requirements include a criminal background check, proof of liability insurance, basic life support certification, current immunization test results and a high school diploma. RN licensure and a bachelor's degree is necessary for master's and doctoral degree programs. Simulations through clinical and classroom training prepare students for a nursing career and for licensing examinations.


Ball State University

Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, is one of the 155 best schools in the Midwest, according to the Princeton Review in 2013. The School of Nursing provides a Simulation and Information Technology Center (SITC) that allows students to practice nursing in a controlled environment. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) prepares students for managerial roles. Master's students may choose a specialization like adult or family nurse practitioner, or they may decide to pursue a leadership track. A Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is also available for advanced nursing studies.

Indiana State University

Located in Terre Haute, Indiana State University offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its nursing school. BSN students have many different tracks from which to choose. Those who are not yet licensed may pursue a traditional track. Those who are already licensed nurses may work towards their BSN in an accelerated track. Master's students can choose a concentration, such as family nurse practitioner, nursing administration or nursing education.

Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne

In Fort Wayne, Indiana, Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne allows students to pursue a baccalaureate or master's degree through its Department of Nursing. The four areas of graduate study concentration are adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner, women's health nurse practitioner, nursing education and nurse executive. This master's degree program is offered online, with the exception of two classes.

Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis

The Indianapolis branch of the Indiana University-Purdue University system was ranked third on the 'Up and Coming' list by U.S. News & World Report and named the eighth best public Midwestern college by Forbes. The School of Nursing is the largest of its kind in America and the only Indiana school to offer a PhD in Nursing. There are many different educational paths for those interested in pursuing a degree in nursing, including the RN to MSN and BSN to PhD options.

Indiana Wesleyan University

Indiana Wesleyan University is in Marion and was ranked as the 27th best regional university in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report in 2013. The School of Nursing is divided into three divisions: pre-licensure, post-licensure and graduate studies. The BSN program combines classroom learning with hands-on experiences. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) students may concentrate in primary care nursing, nursing education or nursing administration.

Ivy Tech Community College

Ivy Tech Community College is a 2-year school based out of Indianapolis. The Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program is geared towards individuals who wish to become registered nurses. It is available at 14 different campuses across the county. The ASN is a selective program that enrolls a limited amount of students annually.

Purdue University-Northwest

Purdue University Northwest in Hammond offers both baccalaureate and master's degree programs. RNs may also enroll in the BSN program to earn their degrees in an accelerated manner. Master's students may choose between concentrations like clinical nurse specialist and family nurse practitioner.

Purdue University-Main Campus

The main campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette is listed among the Princeton Review's 150 'best value' colleges in 2013. The School of Nursing offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Students are able to practice their curriculum in the centers and clinics affiliated with the school, including the Center for Nursing Education and Simulation, the Family Health Clinic of Carroll County and the Nursing Center for Family Health.

University of Southern Indiana

Located in Evansville, the University of Southern Indiana offers a variety of nursing degree options through its College of Nursing & Health Professions. In May 2012, undergraduate students earned a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX-RN examination. MSN students may focus on areas like acute care nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, family nurse practitioner, family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, nursing education or nursing management and leadership.

Vincennes University

Vincennes University in Vincennes, Indiana, was the first college in Indiana and one of the oldest higher education institutions in the country. While it is a 4-year school, Vincennes University primarily offers associate's degrees. The 2-year ASN degree program allows students to gain experience in the school's learning laboratories, hospitals and community agencies. Those students who are already RNs may enroll in the BSN completion program.

Career Requirements

RNs are generally required to complete a degree or diploma, while LPNs require only about one year of schooling. Both types of nurses must then pass a National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to begin working. All undergraduate nursing programs listed in this article prepare students for this examination.
