There is one school offering a program in occupational therapy leading to a doctoral degree. The program is very limited and competition for entry is high. It may be completed in about three and a half years and includes traditional as well as online learning components. In addition to fieldwork, students must complete a capstone project and professional rotations. Additional details about the program are below.
University of Alaska Anchorage
Located in Anchorage, this university enrolls about 17,000 students. It offers a 3.5-year Doctorate in Occupational Therapy program. This entry-level program prepares graduates for professional practice as an occupational therapist. Each fall, a maximum of ten students are allowed entry into the program. Applicants should have a bachelor's degree and have earned at least a C grade in these classes: statistics or research, culture or civilizations, anatomy, theology or philosophy, English and medical terminology.
The actual degree is awarded from Creighton University, but the program's curriculum is delivered through in-person and distance instruction. Labs in the program are held on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus. To earn the degree, students must complete 134 credit hours of study. The program's curriculum includes coursework, entry-level fieldwork, a professional rotation, and a capstone project. Class topics include the musculoskeletal system and body motions, physical rehabilitation, clinical anatomy and occupational therapy practices with children. In addition to the fall and spring, classes are also held in the summers of the second and third years.
Alaska requires that occupational therapists be licensed by the Alaska State Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Board. To become licensed, an individual must have either passed the exam administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT), completed 150 hours of a board-approved internship or finished 60 hours of occupational therapy service and 24 hours of study related to occupational therapy. Eligibility to take the NBCOT exam requires at least a master's degree from a school accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).
In conjunction with Creighton University, which is located in Omaha, Nebraska, the University of Alaska Anchorage offers an ACOTE-accredited doctoral degree program. Graduates of this program are eligible to sit for the NBCOT exam and become licensed in Alaska.
