Essential Information

Typically, students must decide whether to become licensed practical nurses (LPNs) or registered nurses (RNs). LPN programs generally grant an undergraduate certificate or diploma, whereas RN programs grant an associate's or bachelor's degree. In Ohio, there are also bridge programs for existing nurses; LPNs can work toward an associate degree in registered nursing, while RNs can earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Additionally, students who already possess a bachelor's degree in another field can complete an accelerated BSN option.

At the master's degree level, participants may be able to choose a concentration, such as nurse educator, nurse anesthetist, clinical nurse specialist, nurse administrator or specialized nurse practitioner. Ph.D. in nursing programs are also available for nurses who would like to transition into research or academia, while Doctor of Nursing programs are typically designed as terminal clinical degrees. Depending on the program, some courses may be available online.
