Ultrasound exams create images of the inside of the human body and are used to diagnose diseases and ailments. Certificate program students acquire in-depth knowledge of ultrasound equipment, ultrasound physics, disease process, physiology, sectional anatomy, sonographic techniques and patient care. Full-time students can typically complete an online ultrasound program in 18 to 24 months. Most programs are a blend of online and clinical experience. Important prerequisites include general education credits, education in radiologic technology, and medical volunteer or work experience.
Certificate in Ultrasound Technology
Online programs in ultrasound technology typically allow students to specialize in abdominal sonography, OB/GYN sonography or pathological imagery. In addition, most online programs require students to complete outside clinical coursework at a hospital or medical facility in their community.
- Vascular technology procedures
- Medical ethics and law
- Multiplanar sectional anatomy
- Abdominal sonography
- High-resolution sonography
Most online programs require students to have college credits in general education prior to acceptance. Students may need to have taken college-level courses in composition, communications, algebra and history. Some programs may also require education in radiologic technology and volunteer or work experience in a medical setting.
Basic computer skills, a reliable Internet connection and requisite computer software and hardware are required. Coursework is delivered to the student via the Internet or through an interactive video-enabled classroom, which allows for face-to-face interaction between students and instructors.
State licensing is sometimes required for ultrasound technicians and sonographers. Voluntary certification is also available for students who have graduated from an accredited online program in ultrasound technology. The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART) both offer certification to online ultrasound technology graduates.
Graduates of an online certificate program in ultrasound technology have the academic and clinical training to qualify for entry-level positions as an ultrasound technician or sonographer. Ultrasound technicians and sonographers perform ultrasound exams under the direction of a physician.
Most ultrasound technology certificate programs consist of a combination of online and clinical experience. Many programs require students to have some college credits when applying and some states require certification.
