Online Sonography Courses

The courses we'll talk about here highlight some common options for students interested in studying diagnostic medical sonography online.

  • Distance education coursework in this field generally begins with an Introduction to Sonography class. Students get an introduction to sonography terminology and technologies, study anatomical relationships, and learn scan plane orientations. This course also offers training in hospital organization, basic patient care principles, and administrative operations to prepare students for medical careers.
  • In a Sectional Anatomy course, aspiring diagnostic medical sonographers study human anatomy and the ways the body can be viewed through transverse, longitudinal, and coronal planes. Special topics include vasculature and abdominopelvic organs. In addition to viewing online lectures and completing assignments, students may be required to attend hands-on training sessions at local area facilities.
  • As the name implies, an Abdominal Sonography course teaches students the essential diagnostic techniques used by medical sonographers when interpreting information from abdominal sonographs. They learn how to distinguish normal from abnormal sonographic patterns while studying pathology, clinical signs, normal variants, and clinical laboratory tests. Clinical sessions at local area facilities may be required.
  • Students in a Physics of Ultrasound course get an introduction to the acoustical physics principles at work in ultrasound equipment. Sound waves, acoustical properties, transducer characteristics, and range calculations are among the topics of instruction. Artifacts in imaging and motion detection are also introduced.
  • Pelvic and obstetrical sonographs are the focus of a course in Obstetrical and Gynecological Sonography. Students study sonographic images and learn gynecologic and fetal anatomy so they can detect normal growth of a fetus as well as any gynecological and fetal anomalies.
  • A Vascular Sonography course covers vascular anatomy, including the carotid artery and abdominal aorta, as well as scan protocols and techniques. This course trains future diagnostic medical sonographers to evaluate these structures utilizing two-dimensional, Doppler, and pressure readings. Distance learners discuss disease symptoms, as well as image abnormalities.
  • In an Advanced Sonography course, students learn how to use more advanced sonography technologies, including contrast imaging and three- and four-dimensional ultrasound techniques. The course also introduces students to new and cutting edge methods of sonographic imaging.
  • Students enrolled in a Pathophysiology course learn how pathological conditions affect the functioning of human cells, tissues, and organ systems. They also study the way the body responds to diseases and disorders with a focus on how clinical symptoms affect the work of imaging professionals.
  • A Sonography Specialties course gives students the opportunity to learn about one of the advanced specialty areas within the field of sonography. Options include fetal and echocardiography, neurosonography, and breast ultrasound.

Program Information

Diagnostic medical sonographers use ultrasound equipment to direct sound waves into the body in order to produce an image or video used for detecting abnormalities in patients, as well as in fetuses. Online courses in diagnostic medical sonography may be part of certificate, associate degree, and bachelor's degree programs in the field. Diagnostic medical sonography courses typically cover principles and methods for conducting sonographic examinations, as well as for using the equipment. Distance-learning students need to complete hands-on training sessions at local hospitals or healthcare facilities.

Although diagnostic medical sonography programs include some hands-on training requirements, much of the essential academic coursework can be taken online through undergraduate degree and certificate programs.
