Essential Information

Graduate degree programs in holistic nutrition teach students about food, nutrition and how what we eat affects our overall well-being. Students who already have a master's degree in nutrition, holistic health or a related field can pursue a doctorate in this field, though these programs are usually only offered on campus. There are a few types of doctoral programs that focus on holistic nutrition, such as a Doctor of Science (DSC) in Holistic Nutrition and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Holistic Health.

Students looking for online graduate-level programs related to holistic nutrition have several options at the master's level, including a Master of Science (MS) in Holistic Nutrition, MS in Nutrition with an emphasis in holistic nutrition and MS in Nutrition and Integrative Health. Some programs even prepare students for the Holistic Nutrition Credentialing Board's (HNCB) certification exam for holistic nutrition.

Master's Degree in Holistic Nutrition

Online master's degree programs in holistic nutrition require applicants to have bachelor's degrees from accredited schools. Some schools may also require candidates to meet minimum GPA requirements or have completed specific courses in areas like nutrition, human biology, anatomy or statistics.

These 2-year programs teach students about the basic science of nutrition with an emphasis on holistic health and wellness. Online students typically take the same courses as on-campus students, and the programs do not typically require any residencies or on-campus experiences.

Common Coursework

The courses touch on a variety of methods, including nutrition and naturopathy, with which practitioners learn to correct imbalances in the body. Students also learn about preventative health and wellness. Sample courses in the program include:

  • Environmental nutrition
  • Nutrition and endocrinology
  • Nutrition and neurology
  • Applied holistic nutrition
  • Wellness coaching
  • Complementary and alternative medicine
  • Herbal therapies
  • Antioxidants
  • Clinical nutrition
  • Cooking with whole foods

Upon completion of a master's degree program related to holistic nutrition, graduates may be eligible to take several industry certification exams, such as the HNCB's holistic nutrition board certification exam, the Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) exam offered by the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists, and the Certified Clinical Nutrition (CCN) exam available through the Clinical Nutrition Certification Board.

Career Information

Students who earn graduate degrees in holistic nutrition and pass the HNCB examination can work as holistic nutritionists. These online programs may also prepare graduates to work as health educators or researchers. Graduate studies in holistic medicine also allow health practitioners in other fields to integrate holistic nutrition and other forms of complementary medicine into their practice.

While online doctoral programs in holistic nutrition are not commonly available, there are several options at the master's level, including a Master of Science in Holistic Nutrition, Master of Science in Nutrition with an emphasis in holistic nutrition and Master of Science in Nutrition and Integrative Health. All of these programs have a prerequisite of a bachelor's degree in an appropriate field and emphasize topics such as environmental nutrition, wellness coaching and herbal therapies.
