Online Doctorate Degree Program in Medical Diagnostics

While online doctoral degree programs in medical diagnostics are not offered, students have a few alternatives. Find out about online medical diagnostics courses and in which programs they're most commonly offered. Get program info and course topics to make an informed decision.

Essential Information

Medical diagnostic imaging consists of procedures, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs) and computerized tomography (CT) scans, that take images inside of the human body. These images help doctors and other healthcare professionals identify medical conditions. Medical diagnostic physics refers to imaging procedures used to diagnose illnesses; however, emphasis is placed on the application of physics to aid in identifying such medical conditions.

No schools currently offer online programs that award a doctorate in medical diagnostics, but students can take advantage of two related programs. These options are an online bachelor's degree in medical diagnostic imaging and an online certificate in diagnostic medical sonography. Some programs may require clinical rotations.

Bachelor of Science in Medical Diagnostic Imaging

Classes in this program are taken online and accessible from any compatible computer. Coursework is divided into two main categories, with one being devoted to general education while the other deals with content specific to the major.

Information and Requirements

This 4-year online program covers various course topics, including medical terminology, CT scans, MRIs, anatomy, physiology and mammography. Students may also have the option to pursue electives in areas of personal interest.

Applicants to the bachelor's degree program generally need prior coursework related to medical diagnostic imaging, and some programs require students to already hold their associate's degree in radiologic technology.

List of Common Courses

Courses in this program cover the following topics:

  • Computed tomography
  • Cardiovascular-interventional technology
  • Mammography
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Bone densitometry

Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

As opposed to degree programs, which can take several years to complete, online certificates can often be completed in as little as one year's time. Whereas degrees often require general education courses, certificate curricula are much more concentrated: courses in these programs focus only on matter related to medical diagnostics. Program requirements will vary, but students should expect to complete around 50 credit hours.

Information and Requirements

While coursework can be completed online, some programs may require on-site clinical experience, which students must attend. To be eligible for this program, applicants must have an associate's degree (or higher) in a healthcare program that featured hands-on clinical rotations related to patient care.

List of Common Courses

Here are a few examples of course topics that can be found in this program:

  • Sonography principles
  • Instrumentation
  • Procedure
  • Registry review

Although there are no online doctoral programs in medical diagnostics available, students can pursue a related bachelor's degree or certificate via distance learning. Online bachelor's degree programs in medical diagnostic imaging typically require prior related coursework or an associate's degree, while certificate programs in diagnostic medical sonography require an associate's degree and clinical experience.
