Essential Information

Students pursuing advanced online Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training might be required to already hold a current EMT-Basic certification and pass a Web-based pre-entrance exam. While distance learning students must complete the clinical requirements of practical training in person, some schools and training centers offer the classroom instruction through a Web-based platform. As such, programs can vary between strictly online curriculum and a blend of online and on-campus training.

Online courses use video conferencing, streaming audio and video, e-mail and discussion boards. Participation generally requires high-speed Internet access and a computer system capable of running plug-ins or other components of a virtual classroom.

School Information

The following are some examples of schools offering online EMT training:

Hill College / Training Division

Hill College is a 2-year, public college with its main campus in Hillsboro, Texas. Online EMT-Basic and EMT-Intermediate training are offered in conjunction with Training Division, an emergency services training center. Students learn basic life support equipment skills through completing the teaching portion of the course online and traveling to Training Division's campus in Crowley, Texas, for hands-on learning.

The University of Utah's College of Health

The University of Utah's College of Health, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, offers online EMT training courses for candidates seeking to fulfill continuing medical education requirements. Courses provide training in patient assessment, lifting and moving patients, CPR and infection control. Other classes cover topics including substance abuse, medical-legal issues and trauma kinematics (the study of motion). The University of Utah also offers a complete EMT national standard curriculum refresher course online.

Emergency Medical Technician training is available at some schools through online programs, although some may require in-person practical training. Entrance to these programs may require EMT-Basic certification as well as completion of an online pre-entrance exam.
