Online Training in Electrical Technology

Find out about online electrical technology courses and in which programs they're most commonly offered. Get course descriptions, program info and online requirements to make an informed decision.

Essential Information

While fully online training programs in electrical technology are rare due to the hands-on nature of the field, a few schools do offer distance learning programs. Most common are undergraduate programs in electrical engineering technology, which typically combine online learning with hands-on lab experiences. Depending on the school, students may complete these hands-on requirements at an approved campus facility or at home with materials provided when they enrolled in the program. Some programs are presented in synchronous format, which requires students to virtually attend regularly scheduled classes, while others may be offered in a more flexible asynchronous format.

These programs are offered at both the associate's and bachelor's degree levels. Some bachelor's degree programs require applicants to hold associate's degrees already, and they may also require previous coursework in mathematics and/or physics.

Undergraduate Degrees in Electrical Technology

Online training programs in electrical engineering technology, which are available at the associate's and bachelor's degree levels, provide students with the technical skills necessary to design, draft and produce electrical devices. Associate's degree programs typically provide a basic understanding of the field, while bachelor's degree programs generally delve into more in-depth topics, such as the theories of electricity and electronics. Students learn how to apply those theories to real-life problems involving gadget design, electrical circuitry, instrument preparation and system testing.

Information and Requirements

Students are typically required to have a solid foundation in computer science or electronics before enrolling in an online program in electrical engineering technology. Some bachelor's degree programs only accept those individuals who already hold an associate's degree in a field such as electronics engineering or computer engineering. Students may also need to complete prerequisite courses in mathematics and physics.

List of Common Courses

The descriptions below represent the typical curriculum of some courses that may be offered in an online electrical engineering program.

Circuits

Students enrolled in an electrical technology degree program are required to study the basic concepts and principles behind circuits. Classes in the topic cover electrical qualities and electrical components of circuits, as well as circuit voltage resistance and currents.

Electronics

Electronics courses teach students how to build upon the fundamentals of circuit analysis and design. Students are trained in the methods of analyzing and designing basic diodes and transistor circuits.

Instrumentation Measurement

This course introduces students to electrical and pneumatic sensors and teaches students how to use those to interface electronics systems. Students also study digital and analog signal conditioning, data acquisitions systems and analog to digital conversion.

Technical Project Management

Students enrolled in this online course learn project management skills and how to oversee a staff of professionals working on electrical engineering projects. Coursework also covers the basics of scheduling and overseeing a product development cycle.

Undergraduates who want to study electrical technology might consider an online associate's or bachelor's degree program in electrical engineering technology. Students in these programs take electronics-focused online classes and get hands-on lab training either on campus or at home, so they finish with the same education as students who complete an on-campus version of the degree.
