Essential Information About Ultrasound Courses

Online ultrasound courses are typically formatted in a lecture style, with teachers providing notes and other resources through e-mail and interactive Web applications, such as Blackboard. Through this platform, students are able to participate in virtual discussion forums and communicate with their peers. Instructors may upload video and audio files to aid students in the learning process. You may still be required to purchase textbooks and some schools require you to secure a proctor to complete exams.

Some online programs at the bachelor's degree level limit admission to existing diagnostic medical sonographers. Others require applicants to have an associate's degree in a healthcare field as well as practical experience. In such cases, healthcare licensure or certification is often required. In addition, applicants should have completed college-level courses in anatomy and physiology, physics, statistics, algebra and communication.

Students interested in earning a certificate online may need several years of work experience and should be existing emergency medical technicians, certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses or related healthcare workers. In addition to the course requirements listed, you may need to have completed additional courses in healthcare foundations, human development and human disease. Now let's look at some courses typically offered in distance learning ultrasound programs.

Sectional Anatomy

In a sectional anatomy course, students typically study human anatomy from a cross-sectional perspective. The aim is to give students the experience to examine the flat, sectional images they will be examining everyday when using ultrasound imaging devices.

Medical Law and Ethics

Most healthcare programs include a course in medical law and ethics. This type of class is provided to discuss the legal guidelines and ethical rules for providing medical care to patients. It discusses regulations in the healthcare industry, the ethical oath healthcare professionals must take and common interpretations of relevant health laws.

Diagnostic Imaging

A class in diagnostic imaging generally discusses the kinds of ultrasound devices and other imaging technologies used in diagnostic sonography. Students are taught to examine the images that they see and find signs of disease or irregularity.

Clinical Practicum

While some classes in an ultrasound program can be completed online, practicum courses are based on site. Clinical training can be done at community colleges, technical schools or medical facilities close to the student's home. The courses provide students with hands-on experience using ultrasound technology, diagnosing illness from the images they receive and working directly with medical experts. Students log their clinical hours, and such experience counts toward a certificate or degree.

Introduction to Sonography

An introductory sonography course introduces students to medical sonography. Students will learn the basis and historical relevance of ultrasound. They are expected to understand the importance of sonography while also learning legal and medical terminology.

An online ultrasound program usually includes courses in sectional anatomy, medical law and ethics and diagnostic imaging, as well as a clinical practicum and an introductory sonography course.
