Oracle Administration Courses and Classes Overview

Certificate programs in Oracle administration are available at many community colleges and universities, as well as through online programs. Keep reading for more information about courses in Oracle administration.

Essential Information

Knowledge of Oracle database administration protocols can prepare students for careers in computer programming and data entry. In Oracle administration courses and classes, students learn how to do the following:

  • Use PL/SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) to perform functions in Oracle
  • Install Oracle software
  • Create and configure a database or Oracle network
  • Arrange, edit, and remove data from a database
  • Maintain and manage functionality of a database
  • Move, backup, and recover data

Programs in Oracle administration usually culminate in a professional certificate, or they might be part of a more comprehensive degree in computer programming.

List of Oracle Administration Classes

Introduction to SQL Course

As the first course in most programs that prepare students to become an Oracle administrator, students will be introduced to the essentials of the Oracle database system during the introduction to SQL databases. Writing queries against single and multiple tables, using sub-queries for advanced searches, maintenance and alteration of existing data and schema objects may also be covered during this course. Students also learn how to use data manipulation statements (DML) and set operators like ROLLUP and CUBE.

Administration Basics I Course

Immediately following the intro to SQL class, students will take an introductory course in administration basics. This course focuses on the installation and maintenance of an Oracle database. Upon completing this course, students will understand how the components of a database interact with each other as well as how to install a grid infrastructure, troubleshoot databases and manage other users. This course provides hands-on experience in the management of users and storage structures.

Administration Basics II Course

In the administration basics II course, students focus on the security and backup features that are required of all Oracle administrators. Students may learn data recovery, how to use flashback technologies to recover what has been lost, how to schedule automatic backup tasks for the database and how to understand the recovery manager (RMAN). Students may also learn how to review log files for diagnostic purposes.

The PL/SQL Language Course

Understanding the PL/SQL programming language benefits Oracle administrators when it comes to creating and using blocks of application code. This course includes instruction in how to write blocks of application code and how they can be used in data management, debugging and in multiple form and report applications. This class provides students with instruction in how to trigger jobs and schema objects through the use of the PL/SQL language.

In some programs, PL/SQL may be integrated into the first SQL course, and another computer programming course may be added to the curriculum.
