Northern Essex Community College

Each year, more than 6,000 students study at Northern Essex Community College's four campuses, which are located throughout Massachusetts. The school's paramedic program meets all national requirements as well as those for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Upon completion, graduates can sit for the Massachusetts Paramedic Certification Exam.

Certificate in Paramedic (EMT-P) Technology

The 35-credit certificate program combines lab, lecture and clinical experiences to train students in emergency medical services. To be eligible for the certificate program, students must hold CPR certification, undertake a drug screening and have liability insurance. Students learn the correct methods of emergency response and ways to help people in need; this includes not only technical training but also communication and critical thinking skills. Courses include human biology, medical emergencies, trauma emergencies and cardiovascular support.

Associate in Science in Paramedic Technology

This 2-year program trains students to provide emergency services to victims of car accidents, heart attacks and drowning. To be accepted into the degree program, students must have EMT-Basic certification. Students complete lab, clinical and lecture courses. Class topics include anatomy and physiology, trauma emergencies, medical emergencies and clinical pathophysiology; medical Spanish is recommended. Prospective paramedics also complete field internships and accompany licensed paramedics on emergency runs to help provide medical support.
