CBD College

CBD College, also known as Community Based Education and Development, Inc., is a private postsecondary institution that provides career training for several healthcare programs. In addition to the pharmacy technician program, CBD College also offers programs on surgical technology, vocational nursing and medical sonography. The college has an on-site placement department to assist graduates in finding employment.

Pharmacy Technician Diploma

The pharmacy technician training is a 9-month program that offers both day and evening classes. Students complete classroom assignments and clinical experiences in various medical facilities. They also obtain hands-on training working in externships at local pharmacies. Courses include pharmacy calculation, psychopharmacology, anti-inflammatory and antihistamine drugs, federal and state pharmacy laws, pharmaceutical procedures and pharmacy billing. Students also learn first aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). The program requires completing at least 720 hours of study.

Los Angeles ORT College - Los Angeles

Los Angeles ORT College provides career training in the business, technology and medical fields. The college offers administrative assistant and phlebotomy diploma and certificate programs, in addition to degrees in accounting, medical and office assistant and pharmacy tech administration.

Pharmacy Technician Associate of Applied Science

The 8-month pharmacy technician program may include day or evening classes. The program offers a morning session that runs five days a week for 48 weeks or an afternoon/evening session that runs four days a week for 76 weeks. The required 1,200 hours of study include courses in medical terminology, pharmacy administration, insurance billing and payments, federal and state regulations, medication preparation and pharmacy calculations. Hands-on training is obtained through a pharmacy externship. Applicants must pass the entrance exam and complete an interview with the admissions department.

West Los Angeles College

West Los Angeles College is a community college that has more than 600 certificate and degree programs and has three separate programs specializing in pharmacy career training. Each of these programs prepares students for certification exams for state pharmacy technician licensure.

Pharmacy Technician - Basic Certificate

This certificate program is for students seeking work in a retail pharmacy environment. The entire program is two semesters long and includes an externship, in addition to coursework on calculations in pharmacy, healthcare customer service and communications techniques, computers in the health field and operations in pharmacy. Applicants to this program must be 18 or older and hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Coursework in college-level English and math are recommended for applicants. Prior to starting clinicals, students must submit to criminal background checks and drug screenings.

Pharmacy Technician - Advanced Certificate

This certificate program is open to students who hold the basic certificate. The advanced program trains students to function in any pharmacy environment. This means that graduates of this certificate program will be able to work in hospital, assisted living, long-term care and other institutional pharmacies in addition to retail. In addition to courses on sterile products, body systems and pharmacy calculations, students complete externships.

Associate of Science in Pharmacy Technician

This degree program is available to students who have completed both the basic and advanced certificate programs. Because the majority of the coursework for this degree is taken in the certificate programs, it takes only 10 additional units to earn the degree. The remaining coursework covers pharmacy skills and in-service learning for pharmacy sales associate, technician and lead technician work. In addition to this required coursework, students choose six units from options including psychology, chemistry, biology or nutrition.
