Most states do not require phlebotomists to obtain a certification credential or license for work, however a formal training program will help students prepare for their career.

Davis Applied Technology College

Located in Kaysville, Davis Applied Technology College offers vocational training in a number of fields related to health care, the service industry, business, construction and information technology. Students who have an interest in becoming a phlebotomist will find a training course through the school's continuing education program. This course will instruct students in areas like specimen collection, performing venipuncture and lab tests. Students will also have the opportunity to complete a 40-hour externship to obtain professional experience.

Dixie State University

Students will also find phlebotomy training at the Dixie State College of Utah. This school is located in Saint George and offers degree and certificate programs in addition to an array of vocational training courses. The university's phlebotomy training program is offered in conjunction with the Dixie Regional Medical Center. Students learn how to obtain blood and perform lab analysis on the specimens they collect. Students are also trained to use several different techniques and mechanisms to draw blood, including syringes, vacutainers and butterflies. The program also includes an internship.

Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College

Prospective phlebotomy students living in the Ogden area will also find a program offered at Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College. This school does not specifically offers a phlebotomy training program, however, students will find relevant training opportunities offered through the institutions certificate program for clinical lab assistants. This program is designed to provide an overview of lab assistant work and aspiring phlebotomists will find training opportunities devoted to basic phlebotomy skills. The program also instructs students in laboratory methodologies and principles of instrumentation.

Tooele Applied Technology College

Tooele Applied Technology College is located in Tooele. The school offers certificate and an array of vocational and professional training programs. Students will find a phlebotomy program that will result in a certificate of proficiency. Students train for approximately 280 hours and learn skills like preparing patients for procedures, obtaining blood samples, procuring urine samples and disposing of contaminated supplies. Students must be at least 16 years of age to begin the program.
