Essential Information

In Massachusetts, students interested in phlebotomy training can typically apply to an undergraduate certificate program, which may take 1-2 semesters to complete. Students participate in lectures and clinical experiences. Courses cover anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, venipuncture, blood types, lab safety and patient care.

Program applicants may need to be CPR certified and have current health insurance. They may also need to pass background and drug screenings and show proof of current immunizations. Interested students might also need to pass a placement test and undergo a formal interview.

Massachusetts Bay Community College

Although this community college has three locations, the Framingham campus hosts the phlebotomy certificate program. Prospective students must be CPR certified before beginning classes. They'll also need to pass a criminal background check and submit all required health forms. The certificate program takes one semester to complete. Students learn about safety and laboratory procedures, computer applications, blood-borne pathogens, blood collection procedures, electrocardiography techniques and point-of-care testing. In addition to lectures, students participate in clinical training with real patients.

Massasoit Community College

Located in Brockton, this college offers a phlebotomy certificate program. To be admitted, students must first go through a formal interview process with one of the instructors or the program director. Other admissions requirements include proof of immunizations and current health insurance, a criminal background check and a physical exam. Students are also responsible for buying the proper attire (e.g. a white lab coat). Courses cover such topics as laboratory safety, microcollection procedures and patient care techniques. During a 4-week period, students must complete 160 hours of clinical training at either a laboratory or a hospital.

Quincy College

Course credits earned in this Quincy Center college's phlebotomy certificate program can be transferred to associate degree programs in other allied health fields, such as clinical laboratory science. To be eligible for the certificate program, students must be CPR certified, pass background checks and show proof of current immunizations. Drug screenings might also be required. Course topics discuss medical terminology, basic life support techniques and interpersonal communications. Students also complete clinical rotations, but this school has a limited amount of clinical space available. It may take students as long as 12 months to complete this portion of their training.

Career Requirements

Massachusetts requires phlebotomists, also known as phlebotomy technicians, to be licensed. This process entails earning phlebotomy certification from a nationally recognized professional organization, such as the American Medical Technologists, the American Society for Clinical Pathology or any other organization approved by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

To earn certification, these organizations typically require candidates to pass a written exam after completing an accredited or approved training program that includes sufficient coursework and clinical experience. Prospective students should check with their school or credentialing agency to determine whether or not a phlebotomy program will meet these requirements.
