Portland Community College

Students interested in Web design have the opportunity to choose from three certificate programs or an associate's degree program at Portland Community College. Students who complete any of the certificate programs at the college can apply these courses to the associate's program.

Certificate of Completion: Web Assistant I and II

The Web assistant I program requires the completion of 12 credits and includes courses in HTML, website development and SEO. The Web assistant II program includes the same courses as the level I program, but it requires a total of 24 credits. Students learn about JavaScript, JQuery and UX/UI design in the assistant II program.

Web Site Development and Design 1-Year Certificate

This certificate program requires the completion of 52 credits. Although some of the basic courses are similar to those of the Web assistant certificate programs, this certificate program offers a variety of elective courses for students to choose from. Some of the elective options include PHP and MySQL for designers, advanced SQL, Java programming, multimedia authoring and multimedia graphics.

Associate of Applied Science in Web Site Development and Design

The degree curriculum includes courses in writing for multimedia, search engine optimization, Web development and JavaScript, CSS, HTML and more. Pupils can also pursue a variety of elective courses in the field. Upon completion of the program, students should have a strong grasp of HTML, publishing, authoring tools and Javascript.

Mt. Hood Community College

Mt. Hood Community College offers a certificate in Web design for students looking to enter the field after only three quarters of study. The school also offers an associate's program that requires 94-96 credits of coursework.

Certificate in Computer Information Systems: Web Developer - Digital Designer

This program covers a variety of Web tools and concepts, including HTML, JavaScript and XML. Some of the courses students can expect to take include Adobe Photoshop, digital art and web authoring.

Associate of Applied Science in Computer Information Systems: Web Management and Mobile Apps Developer

The associate's degree program takes approximately six quarters to complete, and students may be able to transfer the credits to a 4-year school. After completing the program, students should have the ability to design websites based on specific client needs, design website concepts and create graphic effects. Some of the required courses include Web development, Web authoring, SQL, computer concepts and network fundamentals. In addition to completing a capstone course, students also get to participate in an internship before finishing the program.

Clackamas Community College

This college offers a certificate and associate's program for students interested in Web design. Both programs include computer science and art courses.

Certificate in Web Design

The certificate program can be completed in one year and prepares students for entry-level positions in Web design or related fields. Required courses include computer graphics, Flash Web development, website design and digital photography. Students also have the option to participate in a cooperative work experience in addition to their classroom studies.

Associate of Applied Science in Web Design and Development

This program requires the completion of 97-99 credits and can be finished in two years. Students who complete the program are prepared to work in a variety of entry-level fields, such as programming, Web design and graphic design.

The curriculum includes courses in art, human relations and communication. Required courses include database design, computer graphics, Flash, Linux administration and operating systems. A website capstone course is also required to complete the program.

Other School Options

Located 17.5 miles from Portland, but across the state border in Vancouver, Washington, Clark College also offers programs in Web design in its computer graphics technology division. Relevant programs at this school include an Associate of Applied Technology (AAT) in Web Design and Development, an AAT in Web & Graphic Design, a Web design certificate and a graphic design certificate.
