Program Description:

In Walden University's online Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program with a specialization in Military Families and Culture, students have the opportunity to learn about various counseling techniques for, among others, groups, families, individuals with addictive disorders, and career professionals. The focus is primarily on issues faced by military members, combat veterans, and families of these individuals. Specialization courses provide studies in the socioeconomic and sociocultural impacts of military life on personnel as well as work responsibilities of those in the military so students can be prepared to deliver the proper mental health and social support for this group. Students can also learn about the stress of the military lifestyle on families, including the effects of relocations, separation, and the worry of high-risk duties. In addition to counseling techniques, core classes address assessment tools and methods, research methodologies, the management of psychotropic medications, and crisis and trauma interventions. The program includes lab practicums and a 600-hour field experience in which students participate in supervised case management activities.
