Essential Information

Project management certificate programs are often designed to meet the standards set forth by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and prepare students to sit for one of its six official certifications. Such certificate programs are available at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and few are non-credit options, designed for test preparation. Online as well as evening classes are offered by select schools.

Inver Hills Community College

Inver Grove Heights-based Inver Hills Community College has one project management certificate offered through the college's Business Department. The certificate is considered a career credential and is designed to complement a student's previous degree or work experience. The program includes 11 credits divided among four courses in human relations, basic management principles, planning skills and computer software. Although the program does not prepare graduates to sit for any PMI exams, students may apply the 11 credits of the program to an Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Arts degree program in contemporary business.

North Hennepin Community College

Located in North Brooklyn Park, North Hennepin Community College provides students with an essentials certificate program in project management. The program includes three unique courses designed to train project leaders to manage meetings, teams and industry changes. The program requires 9 to 30 credits for completion. Additionally, a bachelor's degree in program management is available for interested students.

Saint Paul College - Community and Technical College

Located in the city of Saint Paul, Saint Paul College offers students a 21-credit project management certificate. Students take seven courses with topics ranging from business communications to management information systems. The program is split into two semesters.

There is also an associate's degree, which is a 60-credit applied science program. Within the four semesters, students will take classes on subjects including accounting, business skills, finance, management, and human resources. A transfer program is also available through Saint Paul College for students interested in pursuing a bachelor's in project management at Minnesota State University's Moorhead campus.

Career Requirements

The Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certifications are a couple options that professionals can choose from. PMI certifications are globally recognized and transferable across national borders. The credentials are earned by passing a comprehensive examination and meeting the qualification requirements.
