There are a few options for students seeking psychology programs in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, area. Degrees are available in the field at the undergraduate and graduate levels.   • Louisiana State University (LSU) is the larger of the two schools in the region offering programs in psychology. Located in Baton Rouge about three miles from the city's center, LSU is a public, four-year institution that features a Psychological Services Center. Students can earn a bachelor's degree, minor or doctoral degree in the field.
  • Another option for psychology seekers, Southeastern Louisiana University (SELU) is located about 44 miles from Baton Rouge in Hammond, Louisiana. In addition to research opportunities, SELU hosts relevant honors societies. The school offers a bachelor's and master's degree in psychology.

Louisiana State University

LSU is Louisiana's largest public university, and it is a land-grant, sea-grant and space-grant institution. The Department of Psychology at LSU, which features more than 30 faculty members, promotes community awareness through cultural diversity.

Bachelor of Science in Psychology

The Bachelor of Science in Psychology program at LSU emphasizes the study of diverse psychology topics, as well as research. Students complete 120 credit hours of coursework, including a core curriculum of English, math, science and social science classes. The program also requires 32 credit hours in psychology topics, such as assessment methods, developmental processes and cognition. For students interested in conducting their own research, an upper-division honors program is available that requires 12 additional credit hours of seminars and a senior thesis.

Psychology Minor

The 15-credit minor in psychology at LSU includes an introductory psychology class. Students must also complete two courses in core areas and two psychology electives.

Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology

The doctoral psychology program offers areas of specialization in cognitive and brain sciences, biological, industrial/organizational, clinical and school psychology. Most students entering this doctoral program have a bachelor's degree in psychology. Prerequisites for entry into the program include courses in research techniques, introductory psychology and statistics.

The program is composed of seminars, research and practicum experiences. Completion of 72 hours of coursework, a master's thesis or equivalent, an intermediate project, a general examination and a doctoral dissertation is required in order to earn this degree. Though a master's degree is conferred as part of the Ph.D. program, LSU does not offer a standalone master's program.

Southeastern Louisiana University

SELU is Louisiana's third-largest university. The psychology department at Southeastern offers a bachelor's program with an honors option, as well as a research-intensive master's program. Students have access to nine faculty members and resources such as the International Honors Society in Psychology.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program at Southeastern Louisiana University requires completion of general education courses plus 34 credit hours in psychology. It emphasizes the development of research and analytical skills through classes in social, cognitive, clinical, abnormal and evolutionary psychology. An honors program provides students with one-on-one mentorship from faculty members and culminates in a senior thesis.

Master of Arts in Psychology

The Master of Arts in Psychology program at Southeastern is appropriate for students intending to apply to Ph.D. programs, as well as those who may benefit from a master's degree in psychology. The program requires 38 credit hours of coursework, and a concentration in industrial/organizational psychology is available. Additionally, students can choose certain electives in order to zone in on areas of interest. Applicants must provide proof of an undergraduate degree, GRE scores and letters of reference.
