Programs in public relations generally combine studies in communications, journalism, and business. Students might learn techniques to manage media press releases, maintain a corporate identity and develop advertising and promotional programs. There are a few schools offering public relations degrees in Washington, but there's only one institution that offers a certificate in the field.

University of Washington - Seattle Campus

The University of Washington in Seattle, is the largest institution in the Northwest and has a certificate program in public relations and strategic communications through its professional and continuing education division. This certificate program is endorsed by the local chapters of the International Association of Business Communicators and the Public Relations Society of America.

Through the 6 courses in the program, students develop skills with various assignments that focus on challenges in public relations, as well as learn to manage relationships with the media, investors, legislators and community members. During the 9-month program, students take some courses in public relations practices and functions, public relations writing, media relations, and public relations strategy. Program participants also participate in a public relations practicum project, working with local non-profit organizations and businesses on real-world issues.

Eastern Washington University

Eastern Washington University (EWU) is located in Cheney, about 16 miles south of Spokane. A bachelor's degree program in journalism with a concentration in public relations is heavily focused on writing, while a communication studies bachelor's degree program with a public relations emphasis addresses news and public relations writing, as well as public relations theory.
