New York University

New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies offers a non-credit certificate, which includes courses in public speaking.

Certificate in Communication Skills

Students must complete at least four courses chosen from public speaking and writing courses to earn this certificate. Areas of study include speaking with confidence and power, communication skills, public speaking for actors and dynamic speaking. Topics in impromptu speaking, speech and presentation skills, and developing a speaking voice are also part of the program.

Pace University - New York

Pace University is more than 100 years old. It has three campuses: White Plains, Westchester and New York City and offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs.

Public Speaking

The university offers both an online course and an in-person version at the New York campus in public speaking during the January intersession. Students complete the course in four weeks. The Public Speaking class specializes in constructing and presenting well-reasoned public messages. Students must attend sessions and participate in the course through Blackboard, an online content management system. For the online version, students must have the technical knowledge to upload videos to the course's website.

Other School Options

Students may find training in public speaking at Barnard College, about 7.8 mi. (19 min.) from downtown New York City. Barnard offers a speaking fellows program that includes public speaking, giving presentations and participating in class workshops, as well as a one-on-one class. Additionally, the Fashion Institute of Technology, located 2.7 mi (11 min.) from downtown New York City, offers an English and speech program in speech and communication. This school is part of the State University of New York (SUNY).
