Where to Find Public Speaking Classes in New York City
Stand-alone public speaking classes aren't readily available at New York City area schools. Training is usually reserved for students enrolled in certain degree programs, as opposed to the general public. - New York University's Greenwich Village campus is located 1.7 miles from the city's downtown. The school offers a few courses for public speakers.

New York University
New York University's School of Professional Studies offers courses in public speaking.
Ultimate Crash Course in Public Speaking
In this one-day-per week, evening course students will learn about communication styles and verbal and nonverbal communication skills. The courses cover techniques to overcome public speaking weaknesses and enhance performance.
Speak Up - Public Speaking Without Fear
In this 8-session course, students can learn how to overcome anxiety and use strategies to remove fear in public speaking engagements. Student presentations are recorded and critiqued by peers and the instructor.
Sharpening Your Presentation and Speech Skills
Students learn the most effective ways to deliver speeches and use body language in this 8-session course. Videotaping and class presentations allow for constructive feedback.
Being properly prepared and connecting with one's audience are among the main topics addressed in this course. Techniques learned in the class are effective for both formal and informal speeches. Sessions are held Tuesday evenings for five weeks.
Interpersonal Communication Skills
This course is designed to help students build effective personal and professional communication skills. Trust building and decision making are covered. The course meets Saturdays for four sessions.
Pace University - New York
Pace University is over 100 years old. It has three campuses: White Plains, Westchester and New York City and offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs.
The university offers an online course in interpersonal communication during the January intersession. Students complete the course in four weeks. The class discusses communication theory and the process of communications to help students become more effective speakers in private and public situations. The class is completed in four weeks.
This in-person course is offered at the university's New York campus. Topics include how to address various types of audiences, communication styles and the use of technology to support public speeches. This 3-credit course can also be taken in the fall, spring and summer.
Other School Options
Students may find training in public speaking at Barnard College, about 7.8 mi. (19 min.) from downtown New York City. Barnard offers a speaking fellows program that includes public speaking, giving presentations and participating in class workshops, as well as a one-on-one class. Additionally, the Fashion Institute of Technology, located 2.7 mi (11 min.) from downtown New York City, offers an English and communications studies program offering courses in public speaking, intercultural communication and professional speech communication. This school is part of the State University of New York (SUNY).
