St. Petersburg College

St. Petersburg College is a 4-year school that offers certificate, associate's degree and bachelor's degree programs for career preparation, as well continuing education opportunities. This school is one of 14 state colleges.

The arts, A/V technology and communication department offers Associate in Science degrees in digital arts, media and interactive media design; music industry/recording arts; and photographic technology. Certificate programs are also available in six areas. Graduates of the music industry/recording arts program have gone on to become sound engineers, music producers, composers, live performers and DJs. This school is also home to a music technology lab and an MIRA recording studio that feature the latest software and equipment that students can use to practice their craft.

Audio Technology Certificate

This certificate program is designed for individuals who seek training with the Avid Pro Tools system and the opportunity to earn the Certified Operator designation through Avid. The program is 15 credits in length and features coursework in audio mixing and recording techniques, music technology and the use of Avid Pro Tools, as well as a recording studio ensemble. Credits from these courses can be transferred to the associate's degree program.

Associate in Science (AS) in Music Industry/Recording Arts

The AS in Music Industry/Recording Arts program teaches aspiring musicians and recording professionals the skills necessary to seek employment in the field. In addition to completing general education and core curriculum requirements, students select an area of specialization from one of the following tracks: production, composition or performance. Students in each specialization explore topics in music and recording technologies, the music business, acoustics and the legal issues in music.

The production specialization teaches students about audio mixing techniques, critical listening and fundamentals of music. A sound engineering internship is also required. Students in the composition specialization take courses in songwriting, composition in modern media, contemporary music theory and contemporary ear training. The performance specialization offers students a chance to take courses related to stage movement, improvisation, ear training and music theories.

Electives are available in such areas as rhythm and blues, musical instruction, rock and jazz. Students also have the opportunity to develop a music portfolio.
