In 2010, the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) was named the 7th-best public school in the country by U.S. News and World Report. The same year, Princeton Review named it a Best Value College (among public schools) and a Best Southeastern College. The engineering program at Georgia Tech is consistently ranked one of the best in the country by U.S. News and World Report and the Chronicle of Higher Learning.

Georgia Tech offers 42 undergraduate and 77 graduate degree programs through six colleges, including the College of Architecture, College of Management and Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. Degree programs are available in building construction, computer science, industrial engineering, computational media and public policy. The university is also known for its focus on research, with more than $520 million spent on technological research in 2008. Additionally, Georgia Tech has an innovative global outreach education program that provides learning opportunities for students in Asia, Europe and Latin America.

2. Georgia State University in Atlanta

Georgia State University (GSU) awards bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, and the school conducts more academic research than any other urban school in the Southeastern U.S. GSU is divided into six schools, including the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, College of Education, College of Law and J. Mack Robinson College of Business. Students can study more than 200 subjects in 55 degree programs. Sample areas of study include accounting, geology, economics, law, psychology, political science and women's studies. Day and evening classes are available for full- and part-time enrollment.
