CUNY LaGuardia Community College

The Health, Mathematics and Science Division at CUNY LaGuardia Community College offers 13 health sciences programs. Curricula for these certificate and associate's degree programs combine academic coursework with hands-on training to prepare students for licensing exams upon graduation.

LPN Certificate

The 48-credit-hour LPN certificate program at CUNY LaGuardia Community College includes pre-clinical coursework in anatomy, physiology and psychology. Students also complete 32 credit hours of nursing courses covering topics in the art of nursing, mental health nursing, surgical nursing, parent-child nursing and fundamentals of practical nursing. This core nursing curriculum takes about a year to complete. Graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

CUNY Hostos Community College

CUNY Hostos Community College's Allied Health Science Department offers career training programs to students interested in serving the South Bronx community. In addition to nursing degrees and certificates, students can pursue programs in radiologic technology and dental hygiene.

LPN Certificate

This 4-semester LPN certificate can also prepare graduates for the NCLEX-PN exam. After meeting prerequisite requirements and passing assessment tests, students take foundational courses in anatomy and physiology, lifespan development of behavior, ethnicity health and illness and general psychology. More advanced courses cover pharmacology, microbiology and maternal nursing. Two semesters of clinical nursing courses are also required.

CUNY Bronx Community College

CUNY Bronx Community College offers over 40 degree and certificate programs. In addition to educating prospective nurses, the Nursing and Allied Health Sciences Department offers training in radiologic technology.

LPN Certificate

Students enrolled in the 56-credit-hour LPN certificate program at CUNY Bronx Community College complete coursework during the evenings and on weekends. Program applicants must pass a series of writing, reading and pre-nursing assessment exams and have a GPA of at least 2.7 in preclinical courses to be admitted. Core courses teach students about mental health, nutrition, surgical nursing, pharmacology, pediatric nursing, infection control and psychiatric nursing.
