Out of the over 200 institutions of higher learning in Massachusetts, individuals seeking employment as real estate agents may benefit from programs at four different universities. Most of the real estate programs available award students with a certificate, though graduate degrees are also available. Students may need to complete an internship or thesis to graduate. Below are short overviews of two Massachusetts schools' real estate programs, as well as a school comparison table comparing degree programs and tuition fees.

Boston University

Located just west of Fenway Park on the Charles River in Boston, this 4-year, private, not-for-profit educational institution offers professional certificate, bachelor's, master's and advanced degree programs and has a student population of over 32,000 and a student-faculty ratio of 13:1. The school offers four different certificate programs in real estate. Students can earn a certificate in commercial real estate by completing just eight courses, including the investment analysis fundamentals, real estate financing and commercial lease analysis. Completion of the real estate finance program indicates a broad-based understanding of finance issues in commercial real estate. Required courses include fundamentals of investment analysis, fundamentals of market analysis, commercial mortgage underwriting and physical evaluation of real estate assets. The facilities management program ensures that facility management professionals have all the necessary knowledge to effectively execute their career role. An online certificate in commercial real estate practice is also offered to experienced professionals who want to develop their skills.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Currently ranked as one of the top ten universities in the country by U.S. News and World Report, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (or MIT) is a world-renowned college founded in 1861 that offers a master's degree program in real estate development at its Cambridge campus. This one-year program requires 11 months of continuous, full-time study - classes begin at the start of September and thesis projects must be completed in the following July. Coursework includes classes on real estate economics, real estate capital markets and finance theory.
